Two separate incidents disrupt water supplies

Residents and visitors in several parts of Lanzarote have faced temporary interruptions to their water supply following technical problems at two desalination facilities, according to official notices published on 28 October and reporting updated on 29 October 2026.

The incidents affected the Janubio desalination plant in the south and the Díaz Rijo facility, also known as Lanzarote IV. The problems reduced the amount of desalinated water available and put pressure on the island’s storage and distribution network. The exact recovery time was not confirmed in the latest information reviewed.

Which areas have been affected?

An electrical incident at Janubio, in the Yaiza municipality, led to a temporary shutdown of the plant and the Las Breñas pumping station. The official notice identified Yaiza, Uga and Mácher as affected by the interruption.

Separately, faults in production modules 1, 2 and 3 at the Díaz Rijo desalination facility reduced output. Official information listed temporary supply suspensions in Güime, Tao, Muñique, Soo, Tiagua, Teguise, Nazaret, Tahíche, Arrieta, Punta Mujeres, Guatiza, Mala, Haría and Máguez. The overall picture can change as repairs progress, so this list should not be treated as a live status update for every street or property.

Water service was also being managed and restored progressively in areas including the lower part of Tías, Los Fajardos, La Asomada, Conil, Tegoyo and San Bartolomé. Starting restoration procedures does not necessarily mean that every household or business has already regained normal pressure.

Why can water take time to return after a repair?

Lanzarote relies heavily on desalination to turn seawater into usable water. When production equipment or electricity supplies are interrupted, output can fall quickly. Pumping systems, storage reservoirs and the distribution network also need to operate within safe conditions.

Even after equipment is restarted, supplies may return gradually while storage levels recover and water pressure is restored across different areas. This means neighbours in the same municipality may experience different conditions, depending on their location and the state of the local network.

Advice for residents, holidaymakers and businesses

If your accommodation or home is affected, check the latest notices from Aguas de Lanzarote y La Graciosa and ask your accommodation provider or building manager for local information. Avoid assuming that an entire resort or municipality is affected equally.

While the supply is disrupted, use stored water carefully and postpone non-essential water use where possible. If you operate a bar, restaurant, shop or holiday rental, contact your supplier or property manager for practical guidance and keep customers informed if services are affected.

Where to check for updates

The official Aguas de Lanzarote y La Graciosa website publishes water-supply incident notices and updates: https://aguasdelanzaroteylagraciosa.com/

At the time of writing, the notices reviewed did not provide a precise time for full normalisation. This article is based on information available on 29 October 2026 and should be updated if the water authority issues new details.
