If you really want to discover Lanzarote at your own pace, hiring a car is the way to go. The island is compact enough that you can cross from one coast to the other in less than an hour, and the roads are smooth and easy to navigate, with very little traffic once you leave Arrecife behind.

With your own set of wheels, you can seek out those quiet beaches, charming villages and breathtaking viewpoints that most visitors never see. There is a real sense of freedom in being able to explore the island beyond the usual bus routes.

Hiring a car in Lanzarote

When you arrive at Arrecife airport, you will find all the well-known international car hire companies, as well as some excellent local firms such as Cicar, Cabrera Medina and Autoreisen. Over the years, we have found that the local companies often offer better value and are known for their friendly, reliable service. It is always a good idea to book your car online before you travel, as this usually means a better price and peace of mind when you land.

If you prefer not to collect your car at the airport, or only need one for a few days, you will find plenty of car hire offices scattered throughout the main resorts. During the busier months, cars can be in high demand, so it is wise to arrange your booking ahead of time to avoid disappointment.

Car Hire Prices in Lanzarote

If you are planning to visit between November and March, you will find that hiring a small car is very affordable, with prices usually starting from around 15 to 20 euros per day. During the summer months, and particularly in August, rates do climb, often reaching between 30 and 50 euros a day. I always recommend booking your car two to four weeks in advance to secure the best deals. One of the many perks of driving here is that fuel remains much cheaper than on the mainland, making it easy to explore the island at your own pace.

Some car hire companies will ask for a credit card, while others are quite happy to accept cash payments when you collect your vehicle. If you are planning to visit during the busier months, it is always wise to reserve your car ahead of time, as availability can be limited and it is never fun to miss out on the freedom of exploring Lanzarote by car.

Lanzarote Car Hire Insurance and tips

Most car hire agreements here on Lanzarote will include basic third-party insurance as standard. I always suggest considering an excess waiver (CDW) if available, which you can arrange with the rental company or, often more affordably, by taking out a separate policy before you travel. Before you set off, take a few moments to check your car for any existing marks or scratches, and snap a few photos, just to be on the safe side.

It’s also a good idea to jot down your insurance details before you head out. Some of Lanzarote’s most beautiful hidden corners are reached by tracks that are a little rough around the edges, and it’s worth checking whether your hire car insurance covers you for these kinds of roads.
