May marks the true beginning of Lanzarote’s dry season, when rain becomes a distant memory and the days are filled with sunshine from morning until evening. With temperatures gently warming to around 22 to 25 degrees, the island eases into that long, golden stretch of good weather that we enjoy right through to October. The familiar ochre and volcanic black of the landscape returns, creating the classic Lanzarote scenery that so many of us love.
Tourism begins to pick up in May, but the island still feels pleasantly unhurried. It’s one of those months I always recommend to friends and family, as hotel prices remain sensible, the beaches are far from crowded, and the weather is just right for everything from exploring underwater to hiking the trails or simply relaxing and soaking up the atmosphere.
Here on Lanzarote, we enjoy warm, sunny days with temperatures usually sitting between 22 and 25 degrees, and rain is almost unheard of at this time of year. The steady trade winds bring a gentle breeze that keeps the air comfortable, making it a wonderful time for sailing or trying your hand at wind sports.
The sea warms up to a very pleasant 19 or 20 degrees, so swimming is a real pleasure. As the sun sets, evenings remain mild at around 16 or 17 degrees, which means you can linger over dinner outdoors and soak up the relaxed island atmosphere.
May is a wonderful time for diving here on Lanzarote. As the plankton clears, the waters become crystal clear and the marine life is at its most vibrant. It is not unusual to spot angel sharks, rays and barracuda gliding through the blue. If you prefer to stay on dry land, I always recommend visiting the Cesar Manrique Foundation during the quieter weekdays, when you can really soak up the atmosphere. Or perhaps take the ferry from Orzola and spend a peaceful day exploring La Graciosa.
May also brings the Ironman Lanzarote, known as one of the toughest triathlons in the world. For a few days, Puerto del Carmen is filled with energy as athletes and supporters gather from all over. Even if you are not taking part, it is well worth experiencing the unique buzz and excitement that fills the resort.
Almost never. May averages just 1mm of rain, which basically makes it a dry month. You can plan outdoor activities without worrying about the weather.
It's excellent. Water temperatures are comfortable at 19-20°C, visibility is very good, and marine life is active. Popular dive sites include Museo Atlantico, the Playa Blanca reefs, and Puerto del Carmen's marine reserve.
