Lanzarote, is a popular destination for sun-seekers, hikers, and beach lovers. As part of Spain, it benefits from a high standard of healthcare and infrastructure. But before you pack your bags, it’s worth asking: do you actually need travel insurance, and how does healthcare work once you arrive?
Lanzarote offers dramatic volcanic landscapes, golden beaches, and a relaxed pace of life. As part of Spain, it also means access to European-standard healthcare, but that doesn’t automatically mean free or comprehensive coverage for every traveler.
The short answer: yes, it’s strongly recommended.
Even though Lanzarote is within Spain, travel insurance protects you from situations that public healthcare doesn’t fully cover:
- Medical emergencies not fully reimbursed
- Private healthcare costs (often faster than public services)
- Repatriation (getting you home if seriously ill or injured)
- Lost luggage, delays, or cancellations
If you’re from the UK or EU, you might carry a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or EHIC. This allows access to state healthcare, but it’s not a substitute for insurance.
Important: GHIC/EHIC covers necessary medical treatment, not extras like mountain rescue, private clinics, or flights home.
Spain has an excellent public healthcare system, and Lanzarote is no exception.
Main hospital: Hospital Doctor José Molina Orosa (Arrecife)
- Access with GHIC/EHIC (for EU/UK visitors)
- You’ll receive treatment at reduced cost or sometimes free
Steps to use it:
1. Bring your GHIC/EHIC card
2. Go to a local health centre or hospital
3. In emergencies, dial 112 (works across Spain)
Pharmacies are easy to find and marked by a green cross.
- Staff often speak English
- Can advise on minor illnesses
- Some medications require a prescription
Even in a place with good healthcare, unexpected situations can be costly:
- Hiking accidents in volcanic areas like Timanfaya National Park
- Water sports injuries
- Severe illness requiring evacuation
Travel insurance ensures you’re covered for these scenarios without facing large bills.
You don’t legally need travel insurance to visit Lanzarote, but skipping it is a gamble. While public healthcare is accessible, it doesn’t cover everything, and private care can be expensive.
Best approach:
- Bring your GHIC/EHIC if eligible
- Take out comprehensive travel insurance
- Know where the nearest hospital or clinic is
That way, you can focus on enjoying Lanzarote’s beaches, volcanoes, and sunshine, without worrying about “what if.”
