Lanzarote is an easy, safe and welcoming destination. It is part of Spain, uses the euro, and has excellent tourist infrastructure. Here is the practical information that will help you get the most out of your trip.

Money

Don't let money troubles getting in the way of your Lanzarote Holiday.

The currency here is the euro. ATMs are widely available in all resorts and Arrecife. Credit and debit cards are accepted almost everywhere. Visa and Mastercard are universal; Amex is less common. There is no need to carry large amounts of cash. Tipping is not expected but rounding up restaurant bills by 5 to 10 percent is appreciated for good service.

You can find out more in our extensive Lanzarote Money tips guide.

Language

The official language is Spanish. English is widely spoken in tourist areas, hotels and restaurants. Learning a few basic Spanish phrases (hola, gracias, por favor, la cuenta) goes a long way and is always appreciated. Menus are typically available in English and German as well as Spanish.

Health and safety

Lanzarote is very safe with low crime rates. Use normal common sense with valuables. Tap water is desalinated and safe to drink, though most people prefer bottled water for taste. Pharmacies (farmacias) are well-stocked and pharmacists can advise on minor ailments. EU citizens should carry a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC). Travel insurance is recommended for all visitors.

Electricity and plugs

Spain uses type C and F plugs (standard European two-pin round). The voltage is 230V. UK visitors need a plug adapter. US visitors need both an adapter and may need a voltage converter for older appliances.
