Dog walking and helping out at animal shelters

There are many ways to help at the local animal shelters from donations, teaming and volunteering to walking the dogs, here is a list of shelters and organizations you can visit and offer your help.

1. 

SARA Protectora (Tahiche)

The biggest and most well-known shelter on the island, its very volunteer-friendly and welcomes dog walkers and volunteers.

Opening times

Typically Mon–Sat: 10:30–13:00  

• (Afternoons sometimes open — best to check ahead)

2. 

Centro de Protección Animal (Arrecife)

Dog walking possible but may need prior arrangement

Opening times

• Around 11:00–14:00 most days

Teguise Animal Shelter

Dog walking available best to check the times

4. 

La Casa de las Estrellas

Animal sanctuary in the north of Lanzarote that rescues many types of animals (not just dogs), may be helpful if you find an injured animal during you stay. Visits are available but usually part of volunteering stays (Workaway-style)

Dog walking available

Area De Proteccion Animal Ayuntamiento De Yaiza

Dog walking welcomed, prior arrangement not necessary.

There are also several cat charities that always appreciate help with feeding the stray cats of Lanzarote 

⚠️ Important tips before visiting

• Wear closed shoes (dusty/rough terrain)
• Bring water (especially summer)
• Some dogs need experienced handlers
• Always check opening times (they can change)
