42 Affordable-Rent Homes in Playa Blanca: Applications Open for Lanzarote Social Housing

A new opportunity has opened for eligible residents looking for affordable housing in Lanzarote, with the Canary Islands Government beginning the allocation process for 42 public-rental homes in Playa Blanca. The announcement was published in the Boletín Oficial de Canarias on Friday, 23 October 2026. The homes are part of the Los Ajaches residential development in the Montaña Roja area of Playa Blanca, in the municipality of Yaiza. The properties are intended for affordable rent and will be managed through the Canary Islands Housing Institute (Instituto Canario de la Vivienda, or ICAVI).

What do we know about the homes?

The development comprises 42 protected public homes, each with approximately 90 square metres of usable living space and an associated garage of around 20 square metres, according to information released by Yaiza Town Hall. They will be let under a tenancy agreement and must be used as the tenant's main and permanent home. They cannot be used as a holiday home, second residence or temporary tourist accommodation. The homes were acquired through cooperation involving the Lanzarote Cabildo and the Canary Islands housing authorities, with the aim of increasing the supply of affordable public housing in Yaiza. The allocation process is now being formally launched following the publication of the official resolution.

Who can apply for social housing in Playa Blanca?

There are strict eligibility conditions, and being on the housing-demand register does not automatically mean an applicant will receive a property. Applicants must meet the general rules and any conditions for the relevant allocation category. As a general rule, applicants must be registered in the Canary Islands Public Register of Protected Housing Applicants and must demonstrate at least 12 years of uninterrupted residence in the Canary Islands, or 15 years where residence has been interrupted. They must also have lived or worked continuously in the municipality of Yaiza for at least five years before the call was published. The official resolution sets out exceptions in certain circumstances, including specific cases involving survivors of gender-based violence and households temporarily rehoused by a public authority. Applicants must also demonstrate a recognised housing need, meet the applicable income and asset limits, and satisfy the other requirements for public protected housing. Income and assets are assessed under the rules in the resolution, with the 2025 tax year used as the income reference. Special allocation categories include people with reduced mobility or communication, survivors of gender-based violence, people aged up to 35, people aged 65 or over, and returning emigrants, subject to the relevant conditions.

How do you apply?

The application period is 15 working days, counted from the day after the resolution was published in the official Canary Islands bulletin. Anyone considering applying should check the official notice promptly and confirm the precise closing date, taking account of applicable public holidays. Applications should be submitted using the official form through the Canary Islands Government's electronic procedure. The application and full conditions are available here:

Official resolution in the Boletín Oficial de Canarias: Applicants should read the complete resolution above carefully before applying. The authorities may need to verify household details, income, assets and the stated need for housing. If an applicant does not authorise the administration to check certain information, supporting documents may need to be provided. Yaiza Town Hall has also advised that existing registration on the housing-demand register may need to be renewed for this specific allocation, so applicants should check their registration status rather than assume an old entry is sufficient.

How will the homes be allocated?

The Canary Islands Housing Institute is responsible for assessing applications and deciding who qualifies. Where there are more eligible applicants than homes in a particular category, applications will be assessed using the official scoring system, which considers social, financial, family and personal circumstances, as well as housing need. The size and accessibility of a home must also be appropriate for the household. A reserve list of 42 people will also be created. Being placed on that list does not guarantee a home, but people may be contacted in order if a property becomes available under the rules.

Why does this matter for Lanzarote?

Housing affordability has become a major concern for many people who live and work in Lanzarote. In popular areas such as Playa Blanca, the demand for homes can be especially challenging for local households and workers. The release of 42 affordable-rent properties is a limited but tangible addition to the public housing supply. Yaiza Town Hall says more homes are still needed. The council has called for the purchase of a further 76 properties in the same residential development and has also pressed for progress on a separate project involving 136 affordable-rent homes on public land. Those proposals are separate from the current 42-home allocation and should not be confused with properties currently open for applications.

What should residents do now?

Anyone who believes they may qualify should read the official resolution, check their registration in the Public Register of Protected Housing Applicants, gather any required information and submit the application within the deadline. Do not rely solely on social media summaries: the official notice contains the complete eligibility rules, allocation categories and application conditions. Applicants should also monitor the Government of the Canary Islands' official electronic noticeboard for updates and notifications. This is a public-housing allocation for eligible residents, not a general rental listing. The homes are intended to provide permanent housing, and meeting the basic requirements or submitting an application does not guarantee that a property will be awarded.
