53 People, Including Five Children, Rescued After Distress Call Off Lanzarote
A major maritime rescue operation took place off the coast of Lanzarote on Sunday evening after emergency services responded to a distress call from an inflatable boat carrying 53 people, including five children.
The alarm was raised at around 6:45pm after a signal was received via the Mirador del Río communications repeater in the north of the island. Maritime Rescue quickly launched its rescue vessel, Salvamar Al Nair, while officers from the Guardia Civil also joined the search operation.
Rescue teams successfully located the overcrowded inflatable boat and brought all 53 occupants safely to shore. According to initial reports, everyone on board survived the crossing, including the five children travelling with the group. Emergency personnel were on hand to assess those rescued upon their arrival.
A Continuing Challenge Around the Canary Islands
Lanzarote remains one of the closest Canary Islands to the African coast, making it one of the islands most frequently involved in migrant rescue operations. Throughout the year, Maritime Rescue crews regularly respond to vessels attempting the dangerous Atlantic crossing, often in overcrowded inflatable boats or small wooden craft.
The Atlantic migration route is considered one of the world’s most hazardous sea crossings. Rescue teams work around the clock to respond to emergency calls whenever boats are reported in difficulty.
As rescue authorities continue their work, Sunday’s successful operation highlights the rapid response and coordination between Maritime Rescue and the Guardia Civil in ensuring everyone aboard reached safety.
