AEMET Heat Warning for the Canary Islands: Here’s What to Expect in Lanzarote on Tuesday

Spain’s national weather agency, AEMET, has issued an orange weather warning for extreme heat across parts of the Canary Islands on Tuesday, with some areas of the archipelago expected to see temperatures climbing to 37°C or higher. The highest temperatures are forecast for inland and southern areas of islands including Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro, where the heat is expected to be most intense.

What about Lanzarote?

For Lanzarote, the forecast is much less extreme, but it will still be another hot summer’s day.

Temperatures across the island are expected to reach around 29°C, with overnight lows of approximately 20°C. While this is well below the levels expected on some of the western islands, the strong sunshine means it will still feel very warm, particularly during the middle of the day.

The main weather concern for Lanzarote is expected to be the wind rather than the heat. AEMET has issued a yellow warning for strong northeast winds, with gusts of up to 70 km/h, especially affecting exposed and southern parts of the island. These gusts could create difficult conditions on beaches, coastal promenades and exposed roads, while also producing rougher seas around parts of the coastline.

Advice for Residents and Visitors

If you’re planning to spend time outdoors, it’s worth taking a few simple precautions:

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during the hottest hours.
  • Wear sunscreen, a hat and lightweight clothing.
  • Take extra care if visiting beaches or coastal viewpoints where strong gusts may occur.
  • Secure parasols and loose outdoor furniture, as sudden gusts can develop quickly.

Remember Lanzarote’s Microclimates

Although the general forecast suggests highs of around 29°C, weather conditions can vary across the island. Lanzarote’s microclimates mean that inland areas can often feel noticeably warmer than coastal resorts, while wind speeds can differ considerably from one location to another.

Visitors heading to attractions such as Timanfaya National Park, La Geria or the island’s beaches should check the latest local forecast before setting out.

While Lanzarote is not under the orange heat warning, there is still a yellow alert in place for wind, residents and holidaymakers should still prepare for a hot, sunny and windy day on Tuesday and follow any advice issued by local authorities and AEMET as conditions develop.
