Arrecife Man Could Face €30,000 Fine After Cameras Catch Illegal Dumping

Furniture dumped in Argana Alta three times in one night as Arrecife continues crackdown on fly-tipping

A man could be facing a huge fine after allegedly being caught on camera dumping furniture and other bulky rubbish on a street in Arrecife.

The incident took place in Argana Alta, where municipal surveillance cameras reportedly captured the same person abandoning waste on Calle Cribo on three separate occasions during the early hours of the morning.

The footage allowed authorities to identify the individual, and a sanctioning procedure has now been initiated.

How much could the fine be?

The case comes as Arrecife steps up its crackdown on illegal dumping in Lanzarote.

Under the city’s current waste regulations, certain serious offences involving the uncontrolled abandonment or dumping of non-hazardous waste can carry fines of between €3,005.06 and €30,050.60.

That doesn’t mean the man will automatically receive the maximum penalty. The final amount will depend on the circumstances of the case and the sanctioning process.

However, the incident demonstrates just how costly fly-tipping in Arrecife can become.

Cameras are catching illegal dumpers

Arrecife has increasingly turned to surveillance cameras to tackle the problem of rubbish being abandoned in streets, around containers and on unused plots.

And it appears the system is proving useful.

Authorities have been using recorded images to identify people allegedly leaving old furniture, mattresses, household items and other bulky waste where it shouldn’t be.

For residents and businesses in Lanzarote, the message is becoming increasingly difficult to miss: leaving unwanted furniture beside a rubbish container isn’t an acceptable alternative to arranging its proper disposal.

There’s a free alternative

Perhaps most importantly for Arrecife residents, there is already a free bulky waste collection service.

Rather than leaving an old sofa, wardrobe, mattress or appliance on the street, residents can arrange for bulky items to be collected.

The municipal service can be contacted on 928 815 560, while requests can also be made through WhatsApp on 629 793 705.

This is particularly useful for residents carrying out home clearances, moving house or replacing large items of furniture.

A growing problem for Lanzarote

The sheer volume of unwanted household items collected in Arrecife shows why the council is putting greater emphasis on responsible waste disposal.

Illegal dumping doesn’t just create additional work for cleaning crews. Abandoned furniture can obstruct pavements, make neighbourhoods look neglected and contribute to wider environmental problems.

For a busy tourist destination such as Lanzarote, keeping public spaces clean is also important for the island’s image.

With CCTV cameras being used to identify offenders, anyone tempted to leave bulky rubbish on an Arrecife street could now find that what seemed like a quick way of getting rid of an unwanted item becomes a very expensive mistake.

So if you’re clearing out your home in Arrecife, don’t leave it by the bins — arrange the collection properly.
