Arrecife Moves to Sanction Three Restaurants Over Rubbish Left in the Street at Charco de San Ginés
Three restaurants in the popular Charco de San Ginés area of Arrecife are facing proposed sanctions after rubbish was allegedly left repeatedly on a public pavement instead of being placed inside the appropriate waste containers.
The action has been taken by Arrecife Town Hall following complaints from local residents about the ongoing accumulation of rubbish in the area, highlighting the continued focus on waste management and street cleanliness in Arrecife, Lanzarote.
Three restaurants investigated over waste
According to information released by the municipality, the situation centred on Calle Pérez Galdós, close to the Charco de San Ginés.
Residents had reportedly raised concerns about bags of commercial waste being left outside the containers, creating a build-up of rubbish on the pavement.
A monitoring operation was subsequently coordinated by the Arrecife Cleaning Department, headed by councillor Jacobo Lemes, to establish where the waste was coming from.
During the operation, officials observed workers from different businesses leaving large rubbish bags on the pavement rather than putting them inside a container which, according to the municipality, was empty at the time.
The quantity of waste was sufficient to obstruct the pavement and interfere with the normal passage of pedestrians.
Officials then traced the rubbish back to the businesses involved.
Restaurants allegedly lacked required waste-management arrangements
The investigation also identified another issue.
The three businesses were reportedly found not to have the required waste-management contract associated with their commercial activity. The municipality says the establishments had previously been warned about the need to manage their waste correctly.
The proposed sanctions relate to alleged breaches of Arrecife’s rules governing cleanliness and waste management.
