Arrecife Port Sees Passenger Growth Despite Canary Islands-Wide Decline

The Port of Arrecife continues to stand out as one of the Canary Islands’ busiest transport hubs after recording an increase in passenger numbers, despite an overall decline across the region’s state-owned ports.

New figures published by the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC) show that while the eleven state-managed ports across the Canary Islands handled around 30,000 fewer passengers in June compared with the same month last year, Arrecife bucked the trend with passenger traffic rising by 3.6%.

Mixed Picture for Canary Islands Ports

Across the archipelago, the eleven state-owned ports welcomed 627,684 passengers during June, compared with 657,029 in June the previous year – a fall of approximately 4.5%. The decline was particularly noticeable at several western island ports, with Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Santa Cruz de La Palma seeing some of the sharpest reductions in cruise passenger traffic.

Despite these regional figures, Lanzarote’s capital has continued to attract more visitors, reinforcing its growing importance within the Canary Islands’ maritime network.

Cruise Tourism Continues to Support Arrecife

Although overall cruise passenger numbers across the Canary Islands were lower than the previous year during June, Arrecife has continued to build a strong reputation as a popular cruise destination thanks to its modern facilities and convenient location close to the city centre.

Earlier this year, Arrecife experienced significant growth in cruise arrivals, with local authorities highlighting the positive impact that cruise tourism has on restaurants, shops, excursion companies and transport services across the island.

For many visitors, arriving by sea provides easy access to attractions such as:

  • Charco de San Ginés
  • Castillo de San Gabriel
  • Marina Lanzarote
  • Local cafés, restaurants and shopping streets
  • Excursions across Lanzarote including Timanfaya National Park, Jameos del Agua and the island’s beaches

Freight Traffic Also Shows Positive Signs

The latest statistics were not all about passengers. Container traffic through Canary Islands ports increased by 1.8%, reaching 181,142 TEUs during June, suggesting that commercial shipping activity remains healthy.

Vehicle movements, however, fell slightly, decreasing by 1.6% across the state port network.

What This Means for Lanzarote

For residents, businesses and tourists, the latest figures are encouraging.

An increase in passengers using the Port of Arrecife means more potential customers for local businesses, continued demand for excursions and hospitality, and further evidence that Lanzarote remains one of the Canary Islands’ most attractive destinations.

While passenger numbers fluctuate throughout the year depending on cruise schedules and seasonal travel, Arrecife’s ability to grow while many other ports recorded declines highlights the island’s increasing appeal to both ferry passengers and cruise visitors.

With tourism continuing to play a major role in Lanzarote’s economy, maintaining strong maritime connections remains an important part of supporting local employment and businesses.
