Arrecife Strengthens Flood Preparedness with a Municipal Risk Plan
Arrecife, the capital of Lanzarote, is strengthening its approach to flood preparedness through a municipal plan designed to help emergency services coordinate their response when heavy rain threatens the city. The initiative has been presented as a pioneering step in the Canary Islands, with local area coordinators being briefed on the measures and their roles during an emergency.
Why does Arrecife need a flood risk plan?
Although Lanzarote is known for its dry climate and sunshine, intense rainfall can occasionally arrive in a short period. Arrecife’s geography makes this an important issue: parts of the city sit close to sea level, while rainwater can flow down from surrounding areas and barrancos towards the urban centre and coast. When heavy rainfall coincides with drainage systems becoming overwhelmed, some streets can be vulnerable to flooding.
The municipality has previously identified areas that may be affected by flooding, including locations linked to the Barranco de la Fuente and the Argana area. The risks are not limited to rainwater alone; overloaded drains and water moving quickly through natural channels can also contribute to localised problems.
What does the plan aim to do?
The purpose of a municipal flood risk plan is to organise people, information and resources before an emergency happens. That can include identifying sensitive locations, defining responsibilities, coordinating the Policía Local and Protección Civil with other municipal teams, and ensuring that relevant personnel understand how to respond.
The City Council’s latest briefing is intended to help area coordinators understand the actions in detail so that the response can be more effective and efficient if an incident occurs. Planning and coordination are particularly important when several services need to work together quickly.
What should residents and visitors know?
For residents, the existence of a plan is a reminder to take official weather warnings seriously, even on an island where prolonged rain is uncommon. For tourists visiting Lanzarote, it is useful to know that sudden downpours can temporarily affect roads and low-lying areas. Most visits are unaffected, but sensible precautions can make a difference during unsettled weather.
If heavy rain is forecast:
• Check official weather updates from AEMET and alerts from the Canary Islands emergency authorities.
• Follow instructions issued by the Ayuntamiento de Arrecife and emergency services.
• Avoid driving or walking through floodwater, and never enter a flooded underpass or barranco.
• Do not park in areas identified by local authorities as vulnerable during heavy rainfall.
• If you are staying in accommodation, follow the property’s safety advice and any official instructions.
Preparedness matters on a dry island too
Flood planning is not a sign that flooding is constant or that visitors should be worried about travelling to Lanzarote. It is a practical way for a city to prepare for occasional severe weather and reduce the potential impact on people, homes, businesses and roads.
Arrecife’s work highlights the importance of prevention, clear communication and cooperation between local services. As weather patterns can bring periods of intense rainfall even to the eastern Canary Islands, advance planning and public awareness remain valuable parts of keeping both residents and visitors safe.
