Arrest Made After Series of Vehicle and Bin Fires in Arrecife
A man has been arrested in connection with a series of deliberately started fires in Arrecife which damaged 14 vehicles and 13 waste containers.
Residents in parts of Arrecife, Lanzarote, were left alarmed after a number of fires broke out during the early hours of three separate days in June.
The Policía Nacional has now arrested a man who investigators believe is responsible for the incidents.
Six fires across Arrecife
According to information released by the Policía Nacional, the incidents took place during the early mornings of 2, 3 and 4 June 2026.
Investigators from the Brigada Local de Policía Judicial de Arrecife examined three separate incidents and established that they involved as many as six individual fire outbreaks.
The fires were described as particularly intense and resulted in considerable damage across the capital.
In total, 14 vehicles and 13 waste containers were affected, with some vehicles and containers being completely destroyed by the flames.
Investigation leads to arrest
The incidents caused considerable concern among Arrecife residents, particularly because the fires occurred during the early hours and at different locations around the city.
Police enquiries eventually enabled officers to identify and locate a man they allege was behind the different episodes. Police say the suspect has a number of previous police records and has been linked to the incidents under investigation.
Importantly, police have described him as the presumed perpetrator, rather than someone who has been convicted of the offences.
The investigation also benefited from information provided by members of the public. According to the Policía Nacional, citizen cooperation played an important role in helping officers progress the investigation and identify the suspect.
What happened after the arrest?
Once the police investigation had been completed, the arrested man was brought before the relevant judicial authority.
The judge subsequently ordered his admission to a psychiatric hospital unit.
The investigation has therefore brought some closure to a series of Arrecife fires which caused substantial material damage to vehicles and urban waste infrastructure.
A reminder for residents and visitors
Although these incidents happened several months ago, the arrest provides an important update for people living in Arrecife and Lanzarote, as well as visitors staying in the island’s capital.
Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity or has information that could assist with an investigation can contact the Policía Nacional on 091. Police also remind the public that information can be provided anonymously through their online Colabora service.
For tourists hiring a car in Lanzarote, the incidents are also a reminder of the importance of parking in well-lit, populated areas where possible and following normal precautions when leaving a rental vehicle overnight.
The bigger picture for Arrecife
The fires affected both privately owned vehicles and public waste containers, meaning the consequences extended beyond the individual vehicle owners. Damage to street furniture and waste infrastructure can also disrupt normal services for residents and businesses.
For now, the police investigation has established a connection between the three incidents and the arrested suspect, bringing an end to a case that had caused concern among people in Lanzarote’s capital.
