Autism-Friendly Quiet Space Introduced at Puerto del Carmen Funfair
Families visiting Puerto del Carmen this summer will find a welcome new addition to the Fiestas del Carmen funfair, as Tías Town Hall has introduced an autism-friendly support service and dedicated quiet space designed to make the fair more accessible for everyone.
The initiative marks the first time these facilities have been available at the popular fairground and reflects a growing commitment across Lanzarote to creating more inclusive public events for residents and holidaymakers alike. The project is being delivered by Tías Town Hall in partnership with the local association SentirTE, with support from the fairground operators.
A More Inclusive Puerto del Carmen Funfair
The Puerto del Carmen funfair, held as part of the annual Fiestas del Carmen, attracts thousands of visitors every year. While the bright lights, music and excitement are part of the attraction, they can also be overwhelming for autistic people and anyone with sensory sensitivities.
To help address this, organisers have introduced two key services:
- A Support Point, staffed by trained professionals from SentirTE.
- A dedicated Quiet Space where visitors can take a break from the noise, crowds and sensory stimulation.
What Support Is Available?
The Support Point offers:
- Information and guidance for autistic visitors and their families.
- Personalised assistance throughout the event.
- Therapeutic support if required.
- Advice from trained professionals experienced in supporting people with autism.
Meanwhile, the Quiet Space, located in El Fondeadero, provides a calm environment where visitors can regulate their sensory experience before returning to enjoy the festivities if they wish.
When Can Visitors Use the Service?
The autism support facilities are scheduled to operate on:
- 27 July
- 3 August
between 6:00 pm and 9:00 pm.
Visitors looking for assistance can head to the clearly marked Support Point situated next to the event’s Punto Violeta (Purple Point).
A Positive Step for Lanzarote
Accessible tourism has become increasingly important across the Canary Islands, and initiatives such as this help ensure that more families can enjoy local festivals without unnecessary barriers.
For many autistic people, having access to a quiet area and trained support staff can make the difference between leaving early due to sensory overload and enjoying an evening at one of Lanzarote’s most popular summer events.
The move also highlights the growing recognition that accessibility is about far more than physical access—it includes creating environments that are welcoming for people with a wide range of needs.
Planning a Visit?
If you’re staying in Puerto del Carmen during the Fiestas del Carmen, it’s worth knowing that these facilities are available should anyone in your family need a quieter environment or additional support.
Whether you’re a resident or visiting Lanzarote on holiday, the initiative aims to make one of the island’s best-loved summer attractions enjoyable for as many people as possible.
