Calima, Strong Winds and 30°C Heat Return to Lanzarote and Fuerteventura
Residents and visitors in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are being advised to prepare for a significant change in weather, with calima, strengthening winds and temperatures climbing above 30°C expected to affect the eastern Canary Islands.
According to the latest forecasts, hot air arriving from North Africa will push daytime temperatures well above seasonal averages across Lanzarote, La Graciosa and Fuerteventura. Inland parts of Fuerteventura could see highs reaching around 34°C, while many areas of Lanzarote are also expected to exceed 30°C.
The arrival of calima means fine Saharan dust will be carried across the islands, reducing visibility and creating hazy skies. Air quality may deteriorate temporarily, particularly for people with asthma or other respiratory conditions, who are advised to limit prolonged outdoor activity if dust concentrations become high.
At the same time, gusty winds are forecast to develop, adding to the uncomfortable conditions. The combination of hot temperatures, dust and strong winds can increase the risk of dehydration and make outdoor activities more challenging.
Authorities recommend drinking plenty of water, avoiding strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day, seeking shade whenever possible and taking extra care with children, older adults and pets. Motorists should also be aware that visibility may be reduced in areas affected by thicker concentrations of dust.
While calima episodes are a regular feature of life in the Canary Islands, they can vary in intensity and duration. Forecasts suggest conditions should be monitored closely over the coming days, particularly if temperatures remain elevated.
Visitors planning beach trips, hikes or other outdoor activities are encouraged to check the latest local weather updates before setting out and to follow any advice issued by the authorities.
