CANARY ISLANDS DOCTORS’ STRIKE: WHAT LANZAROTE YOU NEED TO KNOW

An ongoing doctors’ strike across the Canary Islands is drawing attention to working conditions within the public health service. For people living in Lanzarote, as well as visitors planning a holiday, the key question is what the industrial action could mean for access to healthcare.

According to figures released by the Canary Islands Health Department for Monday, 19 October 2026, the latest revised estimate put participation in the indefinite strike at around 9.5% of the staff affected by the call to strike. The department’s updated figures reported that 370 professionals took part from 3,888 staff considered affected by the action.

The figures vary between islands. In Lanzarote, eight of the 222 professionals listed as affected took part, representing 3.6%, according to the same report. Gran Canaria recorded the highest participation among the island areas detailed, while the reported figures for Tenerife and Fuerteventura were lower. These are official figures for that particular day and should not be taken as a guarantee of how services will operate on subsequent dates.

WHY ARE DOCTORS STRIKING?

The industrial action concerns disagreements over doctors’ working conditions and the terms being discussed with the regional health authorities. Issues reported in connection with the dispute include pay and the compensation of on-call duties, working hours, career progression, staffing stability and the resources available to healthcare services.

The strike has been described as indefinite, meaning it may continue unless an agreement is reached or the organisers announce a change. Participation can vary from one day to another, so residents and visitors should check for updated information rather than relying solely on a single day’s figures.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR LANZAROTE?

The relatively low participation reported in Lanzarote on 19 October does not mean that every appointment or service will necessarily run as normal. The impact can depend on the type of service, the facility and the arrangements in place for each day. Public health services may operate with minimum staffing arrangements during industrial action.

If you have a routine appointment, check directly with the relevant health centre or hospital before travelling, and look out for any message from the service. If you are visiting Lanzarote, keep your travel insurance details and relevant medical information accessible, and ask your insurer how to obtain assistance if you need medical care during your stay.

Do not delay seeking urgent medical help because of strike reports. In a medical emergency in Spain, call 112. For non-emergency concerns, contact the appropriate healthcare provider to confirm the current arrangements.

KEEPING UP TO DATE

The situation may change as negotiations continue. The most reliable approach is to consult official updates from the Government of the Canary Islands and the Servicio Canario de la Salud, alongside direct information from your healthcare provider. News reports may publish revised figures when authorities correct or update their initial data.

For Lanzarote residents and holidaymakers, the main takeaway is to stay informed, confirm appointments before setting off and avoid assuming that the same level of disruption will apply across every island or every day.
