Container Fires Reported in Arrecife and Tías as Emergency Services Respond Across Lanzarote
Emergency services were called to a series of container fires in Arrecife and Tías on Saturday, with several rubbish and recycling containers destroyed and damage caused to nearby vehicles and street infrastructure.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, but the incidents have once again highlighted an ongoing problem that has affected several parts of Lanzarote in recent months.
Three Containers Destroyed in Arrecife
The first incident occurred shortly before 5:00am in Arrecife after emergency services received reports of several containers on fire.
Firefighters from the Lanzarote and La Graciosa Emergency Consortium attended the scene on Tamaragua Street and Manolo Millares Street, where they found three containers fully engulfed in flames.
The destroyed containers included:
- One organic waste container
- One cardboard recycling container
- One plastics recycling container
Although firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control, all three containers were completely destroyed.
The intense heat from the fire also damaged three nearby parked vehicles, which were affected by the radiant heat despite not catching fire themselves.
Two Separate Fires in Tías
Later the same day, volunteer firefighters (Boluntis) responded to two separate container fires in the municipality of Tías.
The first incident occurred on the LZ-504 road at around 5:00pm. Firefighters found a fire burning inside a container but managed to extinguish it before the structure suffered significant damage by using medium-expansion foam.
The second fire happened much earlier, at approximately 1:30am, on Violetas del Teide Road.
In this case, an organic waste container was already burning intensely and had begun damaging a nearby street lamp. The container itself suffered structural damage before firefighters extinguished the blaze.
Ongoing Concern
Container fires have become an increasingly common issue across parts of Lanzarote in recent months, with authorities continuing to investigate the causes of these incidents. Previous fires have also resulted in damage to vehicles and public infrastructure, costing thousands of euros in repairs and replacements.
