DANA Could Bring Rain and Possible Thunderstorms to Lanzarote and La Graciosa

Visitors and residents in Lanzarote are being advised to keep an eye on the weather forecast, as an area of atmospheric instability to the west of the Canary Islands could bring a change in conditions from Wednesday, 21 October.

Spain’s State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, forecasts increasing cloud and the possibility of showers across Lanzarote and nearby La Graciosa. Some rainfall could be locally moderate or persistent, and an isolated thunderstorm cannot be ruled out. As with many autumn weather systems in the Canary Islands, conditions may vary considerably from one area to another.

WHAT IS A DANA?

DANA is the Spanish abbreviation for an isolated depression at high levels in the atmosphere. It describes a pocket of cold air aloft that can contribute to atmospheric instability. When the right ingredients come together, this can lead to cloud formation, showers and sometimes thunderstorms.

A DANA does not automatically mean severe weather everywhere. Its impact depends on its position, movement and interaction with local conditions, so forecasts can change as meteorologists receive updated information.

WHAT WEATHER IS EXPECTED IN LANZAROTE?

For Wednesday, AEMET’s forecast indicates that cloud may increase through the day, with light showers possible and some locally moderate or persistent rain. A thunderstorm is also possible, although it is not certain that every part of the island will experience rainfall.

Temperatures are expected to remain fairly mild, with forecast highs around 23°C and overnight lows around 20–22°C. A moderate north-easterly wind is expected, potentially stronger inland during the middle of the day.

For Thursday, 22 October, the outlook is more mixed. Cloud and occasional light rain may affect northern areas, while other parts of Lanzarote could see brighter or clearer spells. Temperatures are forecast to remain warm, with highs around 24–26°C. These details may change, so check the latest AEMET forecast before making plans.

WILL THE WEATHER AFFECT HOLIDAY PLANS?

A spell of unsettled weather does not necessarily mean a washout for the whole island. Lanzarote’s weather can differ between coastal resorts, inland villages and higher ground, and showers may be localised. However, anyone planning a beach day, boat trip, hike or excursion should check the latest forecast and local conditions before setting off.

If rain arrives, it can be a good opportunity to explore indoor attractions, browse local shops, enjoy a long lunch or discover some of Lanzarote’s museums and cultural sights. If you are driving, allow extra time if heavy showers reduce visibility or leave water on the road.

SAFETY ADVICE FOR RESIDENTS AND VISITORS

During periods of heavy rain, avoid crossing flooded roads or barrancos, even if the water appears shallow. Never drive or walk through flowing floodwater. Take extra care on slippery paths and roads, and follow any instructions issued by local authorities.

If you are heading to the coast, pay attention to local signs, beach flags and lifeguard advice. Weather inland and sea conditions can differ, so check the relevant forecast for your planned activity.

WHERE TO CHECK THE LATEST LANZAROTE WEATHER FORECAST

Forecasts can be updated as the system develops. For the most reliable information, consult AEMET, Spain’s official meteorological agency, and follow announcements from the Canary Islands emergency services. Do not rely on an earlier forecast if conditions appear to be changing.
