EasyJet’s New Owners: What the Takeover Could Mean for Flights to Lanzarote

EasyJet, one of the UK’s biggest low-cost airlines and a major carrier serving Lanzarote, is set for a significant change after agreeing to a takeover by US investment firm Apollo Global Management in a deal worth approximately €6.6 billion (£5.7 billion).

For thousands of people travelling between the UK and Lanzarote each week, the obvious question is: Will anything change for passengers?

Who is buying EasyJet?

Apollo Global Management is a large American investment company with more than $1 trillion in assets under management. It has previously invested in several aviation businesses, meaning it is no stranger to the airline industry.

The takeover follows months of interest from investors, with Apollo ultimately securing the support of EasyJet’s board after a rival bidder withdrew.

The deal is expected to complete during the first quarter of 2027, subject to shareholder and regulatory approval.

Will EasyJet still fly to Lanzarote?

There has been no announcement suggesting routes to Lanzarote will be reduced or removed. In fact, Lanzarote remains one of EasyJet’s most popular leisure destinations, with year-round demand from the UK and mainland Europe.

EasyJet is currently one of the island’s busiest international airlines, connecting Lanzarote with numerous cities across Britain and Europe, making it an important airline for both tourists and residents.

What are Apollo’s plans?

While the airline will remain recognisable to passengers, Apollo has outlined ambitions to strengthen the business rather than completely reinvent it.

Plans discussed include:

  • Continuing to grow EasyJet Holidays, which has become one of the airline’s fastest-growing businesses.
  • Investing in technology to improve customer services and increase additional revenue.
  • Looking at more premium options on selected routes aimed at business travellers.
  • Exploring partnerships with other airlines to improve onward connections.
  • Supporting long-term growth while operating as a privately owned company.

Should passengers expect higher prices?

There is currently no indication that ticket prices to Lanzarote will rise solely because of the takeover.

Air fares are influenced by a wide range of factors including:

  • Fuel prices
  • Airport charges
  • Demand
  • Seasonal travel
  • Competition from airlines such as Ryanair, Jet2 and TUI

Competition on UK to Lanzarote routes remains strong, which should continue to help keep prices competitive.

Why does this matter for Lanzarote?

Tourism is the backbone of Lanzarote’s economy, and airlines such as EasyJet play a vital role in bringing millions of visitors to the island each year.

A financially stronger EasyJet could provide greater investment opportunities, helping the airline expand its holiday business and maintain its extensive network of European destinations.

For holidaymakers planning a trip to Lanzarote, bookings, flights and package holidays continue to operate as normal.

Any immediate changes?

For now, travellers are unlikely to notice any difference when booking flights or checking in.

EasyJet has stated that its existing management team will continue leading the airline, while Apollo has indicated it wants to build on the company’s success rather than dramatically alter its day-to-day operations.

Flights continue to operate as normal, and there are no announced changes to the airline’s services to the Canary Islands. However, over the coming years, passengers may begin to see improvements through expanded holiday products, enhanced digital services and potentially new travel options as EasyJet develops under its new ownership.

As always, we’ll continue to monitor any developments that could affect Lanzarote flights, Canary Islands tourism, and the millions of passengers who choose EasyJet every year.
