Electric Scooter Collision in Arrecife Leaves Woman Injured

A woman was taken to hospital after an electric scooter collided with a car in Arrecife on Thursday afternoon, October 1, 2026.

The incident happened on Calle Tinache in the Lanzarote capital. According to information released through the Canary Islands emergency coordination service, CECOES 1-1-2 received the alert at 3:08pm reporting a collision between a car and an electric scooter.

The scooter rider, a 24-year-old woman, was assessed at the scene by the Servicio de Urgencias Canario (SUC). She was reported to have suffered a moderate traumatic head injury and was taken by basic life-support ambulance to Hospital Doctor José Molina Orosa in Lanzarote.

Local Police officers also attended the scene and were responsible for the official report into the incident. The available emergency information does not state how the collision happened or who was considered responsible.

A timely reminder for anyone using a scooter in Lanzarote

The accident comes on the same day that major changes to Spain's traffic regulations take effect. The new rules include specific national requirements for users of personal mobility vehicles, the category that includes electric scooters.

From October 1, 2026, riders must be at least 15 years old and must wear a protective helmet. Reflective clothing or an appropriate luminous/reflective element is also required at night or when visibility is seriously reduced. The rules also restrict electric scooters outside built-up areas to segregated routes such as cycle paths, unless signs prohibit their use.

There is one important detail for visitors to remember: the requirement for scooter lighting to remain permanently switched on, including during daylight, does not begin until October 1, 2027.

Local rules can matter too

National traffic rules are not the whole picture for people riding an electric scooter in Lanzarote. Municipal regulations can add local requirements, so visitors hiring a scooter should check the rules applying in the municipality where they are riding.

In Arrecife, the city council has also been working on new municipal regulations for electric scooters. The council says its proposed rules address issues including where scooters can be ridden and parked, with circulation on pavements and pedestrian areas prohibited.

For tourists, the simplest approach is to treat an electric scooter as a road vehicle rather than as something similar to a pedestrian. Stay alert around junctions, obey signs and traffic lights, avoid pavements and pedestrian areas, and make sure the scooter you are using meets the current legal requirements.

Drivers should also remain particularly aware of scooters, bicycles and other vulnerable road users. The new national traffic reforms are designed in part to strengthen protection for people who have less physical protection than someone travelling inside a car.

What we know about today's Lanzarote accident

At the time of publication, the confirmed facts are limited to the emergency-service information: the collision occurred on Calle Tinache in Arrecife at around 3:08pm; a 24-year-old woman riding an electric scooter suffered a moderate traumatic head injury; SUC transported her by basic life-support ambulance to Hospital Doctor José Molina Orosa; and Local Police attended and prepared the official report.

There has been no official information released at this stage giving further details about the circumstances of the collision or the woman's subsequent condition.

For anyone living in Lanzarote or visiting the island, the incident is another reminder that road safety matters just as much on a holiday as it does at home. Electric scooters can be a convenient way to get around, but riders and drivers share responsibility for keeping Lanzarote's roads and streets safe.
