European Holiday Trends Shift Towards Shorter Breaks – What It Could Mean for Lanzarote

A new European travel survey suggests that holiday habits are beginning to change, with more people choosing short breaks, nearby destinations, and lower-cost holidays as rising travel expenses continue to affect household budgets. While international travel remains popular, economic pressures are encouraging many travellers to rethink how, when and where they take their holidays.

For destinations like Lanzarote, which depend heavily on overseas visitors, the findings offer an interesting insight into how tourism could evolve over the coming months and years.

Rising Costs Are Influencing Travel Decisions

According to a YouGov survey of more than 14,000 people across 12 European countries, around 11% of Europeans say they will not take a holiday this summer because of higher energy and travel costs. The figure rises to 15% in both Germany and France, two of the Canary Islands’ most important tourism markets.

Among those who are still travelling, many are:

  • Choosing shorter holidays.
  • Staying within their own country or nearby European destinations.
  • Flying less frequently.
  • Looking for better value for money.

Higher fuel prices have contributed to increased transport costs, with airlines also facing more expensive operating conditions.

Short City Breaks Continue to Grow

The survey found that Europe remains the favourite holiday destination for European travellers.

Many respondents are planning:

  • Domestic breaks lasting up to six days.
  • Short city breaks elsewhere in Europe.
  • Week-long European holidays rather than longer, more expensive long-haul trips.

Younger travellers were particularly likely to choose short, flexible holidays closer to home, allowing them to reduce travel costs while still enjoying time away.

What Does This Mean for Lanzarote?

Although the trend towards local tourism is growing in mainland Europe, Lanzarote continues to enjoy several advantages that make it attractive to international visitors.

Unlike many mainland destinations, Lanzarote offers:

  • Year-round sunshine.
  • Warm winter temperatures.
  • Direct flights from many European airports.
  • A wide choice of hotels, villas and self-catering accommodation.
  • Beaches, volcanic landscapes and outdoor activities within a compact island.

For many visitors from the UK, Ireland, Germany and mainland Europe, a four or five-day escape to Lanzarote can still represent good value compared with domestic holidays, particularly outside peak school holiday periods.

Value for Money Is Becoming More Important

The research suggests travellers are becoming increasingly focused on getting the most from their holiday budget rather than simply travelling further afield.

This could benefit destinations that offer:

  • Affordable accommodation.
  • Competitive restaurant prices.
  • Free natural attractions.
  • Reliable weather.
  • Easy airport access.

Lanzarote scores well in many of these areas, especially when compared with destinations where accommodation and dining costs have risen sharply.

Air Travel Faces New Challenges

The report also reflects growing pressure on the aviation industry.

Higher fuel prices have increased airline costs, while some carriers have warned that expensive jet fuel may continue to influence fares and route planning if energy markets remain volatile.

Even so, European tourism overall has remained resilient, with many travellers adapting their plans rather than cancelling holidays altogether.

Will Lanzarote Feel the Impact?

It’s too early to say whether these changing travel habits will significantly affect Lanzarote.

The island has shown remarkable resilience over recent years, continuing to attract visitors looking for sunshine, beaches and outdoor activities throughout every season.

While some families may shorten their holidays or travel less frequently, others may continue choosing Lanzarote because of its reliable climate and excellent flight connections.

The coming autumn and winter booking seasons will provide a clearer indication of whether these wider European trends begin to influence visitor numbers to the Canary Islands.
