Famara’s Fragile Dunes Under Pressure as Visitor Numbers Continue to Grow

One of Lanzarote’s most spectacular natural landscapes is facing increasing pressure as growing numbers of vehicles continue to use the sand and surrounding dunes at Famara Beach.

The dramatic coastline, famous for its golden sands, towering cliffs and world-class surfing conditions, is also home to a protected dune ecosystem that experts say is becoming increasingly vulnerable. Conservationists are warning that the very popularity of Famara is putting one of the Canary Islands’ most valuable natural habitats at risk.

Why the Famara Dunes Are So Important

Many visitors see the dunes simply as part of the beach, but they are actually a living ecosystem.

The dune system supports specialised native plants that have adapted to survive in harsh coastal conditions. These plants help stabilise the sand, reduce erosion and provide shelter for insects and wildlife that depend on this fragile environment.

Parts of the area are recognised as a habitat of European conservation importance, making their protection a priority. Damage to vegetation can take many years to recover because the harsh climate slows natural regeneration.

Cars and Overcrowding Causing Concern

On busy weekends and holidays, hundreds of vehicles can often be seen parked close to or directly on sandy areas near the beach.

While parking has long been part of visiting Famara, environmental groups argue that increasing visitor numbers are placing additional stress on the dune system. Vehicle tyres, repeated foot traffic and informal parking areas can crush vegetation, compact the sand and make it more difficult for plants to recover naturally.

As tourism continues to grow, finding the right balance between accessibility and conservation has become an increasingly important issue for Lanzarote.

A Place Loved by Tourists and Residents

Famara remains one of Lanzarote’s most popular destinations.

The beach attracts surfers from around the world thanks to its consistent Atlantic waves, while photographers, hikers and families visit for its spectacular scenery beneath the impressive Famara cliffs. Even outside the busy summer months, the area is considered one of the island’s must-see attractions.

Its popularity is exactly why protecting the surrounding environment has become such a major concern.

Responsible Tourism Can Make a Difference

Visitors can help protect the area by:

  • Parking only in designated parking areas.
  • Avoiding driving or walking across dune vegetation.
  • Following marked access routes to the beach.
  • Taking litter home or using available bins.
  • Respecting any conservation signs or temporary restrictions.

Small actions from thousands of visitors can have a significant impact on preserving the landscape for future generations.

Looking Ahead

Protecting Famara’s dunes is not about discouraging people from visiting one of Lanzarote’s most beautiful beaches. Instead, it is about ensuring that tourism and nature can exist side by side.

As visitor numbers continue to increase across Lanzarote, protecting fragile habitats like Famara will become even more important. By respecting the environment today, both residents and tourists can help ensure this unique coastline remains one of the Canary Islands’ most iconic natural treasures for many years to come.
