Firefighters Put Out Fire in Abandoned Arrecife House

Firefighters were called to an abandoned house in Arrecife during the early hours of Friday, 23 October, after a fire broke out inside the property on Doctor Fleming Street.

The emergency was reported to the Canary Islands’ 112 emergency coordination centre at around 4:15 am. Firefighters from Lanzarote’s Security and Emergency Consortium attended, alongside officers from the National Police and Local Police.

On arrival, crews found that the fire had started in a room inside the building. The flames affected wooden materials, a door and beams in the ceiling. Emergency personnel also identified significant structural risks within the property, particularly around the ceilings.

Before tackling the fire, firefighters checked the building and confirmed that nobody was inside. They then carried out the work needed to extinguish the flames. Police officers helped secure the area and support the emergency operation.

Once the incident had been dealt with, the teams informed the emergency coordination centre and returned to their respective stations.

The importance of responding to fires in vacant buildings

Although the property was reported to be abandoned, fires in empty or disused buildings can still present serious risks. Ageing roofs, damaged floors and weakened structural supports may make these properties particularly hazardous for emergency crews and anyone who enters them.

Residents and visitors should avoid entering fire-damaged or derelict buildings, even if there are no visible flames. Smoke damage and structural instability may remain after a fire has been extinguished.

Lanzarote residents and tourists should also keep clear of emergency scenes and follow instructions from police and firefighters, allowing crews room to work safely.

This incident was attended by local emergency services in Arrecife. The information available at the time of writing did not establish the cause of the fire, so no cause is being suggested.
