Four Waste Containers Destroyed in Overnight Fire in San Bartolomé, Lanzarote

Four rubbish and recycling containers were completely destroyed in a fire in San Bartolomé during the early hours of Sunday morning, September 6.

The incident happened at around 1:18am on Sunday, September 6, on Calle José María Gil in San Bartolomé, where a number of waste containers caught fire.

According to information from the emergency services, firefighters from the Consorcio de Seguridad y Emergencias de Lanzarote were dispatched after the emergency coordination centre received an alert about the blaze. Local Police officers also attended the scene.

Four containers completely destroyed

The fire involved four containers in total. These included:

  • Two containers for organic household waste
  • One container for cardboard recycling
  • One container for glass recycling

By the time firefighters arrived, all four containers were already heavily involved in the fire and were subsequently completely destroyed.

Firefighters tackled the flames with water and brought the incident under control before returning to their base. Police officers helped secure the area while the emergency operation was carried out.

Incident happened in central San Bartolomé

The fire took place on Calle José María Gil, one of the streets within the town of San Bartolomé, in the municipality of the same name.

The location is used for household waste and recycling collection, meaning the loss of the four containers could temporarily affect local rubbish and recycling arrangements until replacements are installed.

At present, there has been no official indication of what caused the fire, and it would be premature to speculate about how it started.

A reminder of the importance of waste safety in Lanzarote

Fires involving rubbish containers have occurred at various locations across Lanzarote in recent years. Apart from the cost of replacing the containers themselves, fires in residential areas can present a risk to nearby vehicles, buildings and other street furniture.

Previous incidents have also highlighted how quickly a container fire can spread when several waste containers are positioned together.

For residents and visitors in San Bartolomé, Lanzarote, the incident is also a reminder of the importance of using the correct recycling containers and reporting anything suspicious around waste collection points to the appropriate authorities.

No injuries have been reported in connection with this particular fire.
