Giant Tortilla Brings Caleta Caballo Together During La Lapa Festival

Residents of Caleta Caballo have created one seriously impressive tortilla, using 500 eggs and 80 kilos of potatoes as part of a huge community cooking effort during the village’s La Lapa celebrations.

There was certainly no shortage of food in Caleta Caballo this weekend, as residents came together to prepare a spectacular giant Spanish tortilla as part of the village’s annual Fiestas de La Lapa.

The enormous tortilla was prepared on Saturday, September 5, with a huge amount of work going into producing a dish large enough to feed the local community.

500 eggs and 80 kilos of potatoes

The scale of the cooking operation was impressive.

According to the details reported locally, the giant tortilla was made using:

  • 500 eggs
  • 80 kilos of potatoes
  • 3 kilos of bacon
  • 2 kilos of garlic
  • 1 kilo of salt

And that was just the preparation. Around six hours of cooking were needed, with additional time required beforehand to peel and prepare the potatoes and organise all the ingredients.

For a traditional Spanish tortilla, that’s a lot of potatoes and a lot of eggs — and producing one on this scale was clearly a major community effort.

A true community event in Lanzarote

What makes the story particularly appealing isn’t simply the size of the tortilla, but the number of people who helped make it happen.

Residents from Caleta Caballo, the small coastal settlement in the municipality of Teguise, worked together to prepare the giant dish during the final weekend of the La Lapa fiestas.

On Sunday morning, portions were being distributed among local residents, turning the enormous cooking project into a communal meal and another memorable part of the celebrations. Organisers also indicated that any remaining tortilla would be sent to Cáritas, ensuring that surplus food could be put to good use.

Celebrating La Lapa in Caleta Caballo

The giant tortilla formed part of the celebrations surrounding La Lapa, one of the traditional annual festivities in Caleta Caballo.

The coastal village sits on the northwestern side of Lanzarote, within the municipality of Teguise and close to La Santa and Tinajo. It is particularly known for its coastline, white sandy beach and excellent conditions for surfing and bodyboarding.

The Fiestas de La Lapa traditionally take place around the beginning of September, bringing residents together for a mixture of social, cultural and religious events.

This year’s celebrations concluded on Sunday, September 6, with the traditional maritime procession of La Lapa, another important part of the festivities.

Another example of Lanzarote’s community spirit

For visitors to Lanzarote, events such as this offer an insight into a side of the island that can be easy to miss when staying in the main tourist resorts.

Away from the beaches and popular attractions, villages such as Caleta Caballo continue to have a strong community atmosphere, with local fiestas providing opportunities for residents, families and visitors to come together.

And while a giant tortilla made with 500 eggs and 80 kilos of potatoes is certainly difficult to overlook, it’s the community effort behind it that arguably makes the story most special.

Lanzarote’s local fiestas are often about much more than entertainment — they’re about food, friendship, tradition and bringing people together. In Caleta Caballo this weekend, that tradition came in the form of one very, very large tortilla.
