Health and Safety Complaint Filed Over Working Conditions at Lanzarote Airport Security Controls
A complaint has been lodged with Spain’s Labour Inspectorate over working conditions at Lanzarote Airport, following concerns that employees working at the airport’s security control area are being exposed to excessive heat.
According to reports, the CSIF (Central Sindical Independiente y de Funcionarios) union has submitted a formal complaint to the Labour and Social Security Inspectorate, claiming that staff working at the airport’s security screening points are experiencing unhealthy conditions due to high temperatures and inadequate air conditioning.
Concerns Over Heat at Lanzarote Airport
The union says that prolonged exposure to high temperatures has resulted in some employees developing heat-related skin conditions and other health concerns. It argues that the lack of effective climate control inside parts of the security control area is creating an uncomfortable and potentially unsafe working environment, particularly during the Canary Islands’ summer months.
The complaint asks the Labour Inspectorate to investigate whether current workplace conditions comply with Spain’s occupational health and safety regulations.
What This Means for Passengers
At present, there has been no indication that airport security operations or passenger services have been disrupted. Security screening continues as normal, and there are no reports of delays linked to the complaint.
However, the issue highlights the challenging conditions faced by many frontline airport employees during periods of extreme heat, especially as Lanzarote Airport experiences one of its busiest tourism seasons of the year.
For travellers, the complaint is unlikely to affect holiday plans, but it serves as a reminder of the pressures placed on airport staff who help keep passengers moving safely through the terminal.
Could Changes Be Introduced?
If inspectors conclude that working conditions fall below the required health and safety standards, recommendations or enforcement measures could follow. These could include improvements to air conditioning systems, additional cooling measures, more frequent rest breaks, or other steps designed to protect employees during periods of high temperatures.
No findings have yet been published, and the investigation process may take time.
A Busy Summer for Lanzarote Airport
Lanzarote Airport continues to welcome thousands of visitors each day from across Europe, with summer remaining one of the island’s busiest travel periods. As passenger numbers remain high, ensuring comfortable and safe working conditions for airport employees is considered an important part of maintaining efficient airport operations.
Authorities have not announced any changes affecting passengers, and flights continue to operate as scheduled.
