Landslide at Famara Cliffs Prompts Trail Closure in Lanzarote

A large landslide at the dramatic cliffs of Risco de Famara caused concern across Lanzarote on Monday after a section of rock collapsed into the sea, sending a huge cloud of dust into the air that was visible from several parts of the island and even nearby La Graciosa.

The collapse took place in the “Gayo” area of the Famara cliffs, within the municipality of Haría. Emergency services quickly inspected the site, and authorities confirmed there were no reported injuries or missing persons.

Officials from Lanzarote’s Emergency and Safety Consortium believe the landslide may have been caused by ongoing erosion following an unusually wet winter and heavy rainfall earlier this year. Initial reports suggest the rockfall occurred roughly 40 metres below the cliff top and affected an area around 25 metres wide.

Popular Hiking Route Closed

Following the incident, the Cabildo de Lanzarote announced the temporary closure of part of the walking trail connecting the Casa del Agua route with the path leading toward Guinate. The affected trail is popular with hikers exploring the wild coastline between Famara Beach and Playa del Risco.

Authorities are continuing to assess the stability of the area before deciding when it will be safe to reopen the route.

Advice for Tourists Visiting Famara

Despite the landslide, Famara Beach remains open and continues to attract surfers, photographers, and visitors looking to experience one of Lanzarote’s most spectacular natural landscapes. However, tourists are being advised to avoid restricted hiking paths and stay away from cliff edges while inspections continue.

The Famara cliffs are among Lanzarote’s most iconic natural landmarks, stretching along the island’s northwest coast and forming part of the protected Chinijo Archipelago Natural Park
