Lanzarote Airport Passenger Numbers Fall Slightly Compared to 2025

Lanzarote’s César Manrique Airport welcomed 717,869 passengers during April 2026, marking a slight decline compared with the same month in 2025 as travel disruption and changing tourism patterns continue affecting European aviation.

Official airport figures show passenger traffic fell by 3.7% year-on-year, representing around 27,000 fewer travellers than April last year. Despite the drop, Lanzarote remains one of the busiest tourism destinations in the Canary Islands, with visitor demand still strong.

The reduction follows several months of softer airport growth across parts of the Canary Islands. In March 2026, Lanzarote Airport also recorded a small year-on-year decline of 0.6%, handling 794,349 passengers.

Why Are Passenger Numbers Falling Slightly?

While tourism in Lanzarote remains extremely healthy overall, several factors are believed to have contributed to the dip in April traffic.

Air Traffic Control Disruption

Spain experienced ongoing air traffic control disruption during April, with strike action and operational delays affecting flights to island destinations including Lanzarote.

Higher Travel Costs Across Europe

Rising airfares, fuel costs and wider economic pressures have caused some European travellers to delay or shorten holidays in 2026. Several major European airports also reported weaker passenger growth during April.

Border Control Delays

Longer processing times linked to Europe’s new Entry/Exit System and passport control pressures have also impacted some passenger experience at Spanish airports.

Lanzarote Tourism Still Operating Near Record Levels

Despite the slight decline, Lanzarote Airport continues operating close to historic highs.

In 2025, César Manrique Airport handled a record 8,920,901 passengers — a 2.4% increase on 2024 and the busiest year in the airport’s history.

The airport remains one of Spain’s busiest tourism gateways and a crucial hub for British, Irish and European visitors travelling to the Canary Islands.

British tourism continues to account for a significant percentage of Lanzarote’s international arrivals, along with Ireland, Germany and France.

What This Means for Tourists Visiting Lanzarote

For holidaymakers, the latest figures suggest Lanzarote remains hugely popular heading into summer 2026, even if airport growth has temporarily slowed.

Travellers are still advised to:

  • Arrive early for flights
  • Check airline updates regularly
  • Allow extra time for passport control
  • Book airport transfers in advance during peak weeks

Airport operations in Lanzarote are continuing normally, and airlines are maintaining extensive summer schedules from the UK and mainland Europe.

Lanzarote Airport Continues to Play Key Role in the Island Economy

Tourism remains the backbone of Lanzarote’s economy, with airport traffic acting as one of the clearest indicators of visitor demand.

Even with April’s slight decrease, the island continues attracting hundreds of thousands of tourists each month thanks to:

  • Year-round sunshine
  • Beaches and resorts
  • Family-friendly tourism
  • Diving and water sports
  • Volcanic landscapes
  • Strong UK flight connectivity

Industry experts expect passenger numbers to recover further during the busy summer and winter tourism seasons.
