Lanzarote Braces for Rising Temperatures as Canary Islands Heatwave Approaches

Visitors and residents in Lanzarote are being advised to prepare for a significant rise in temperatures over the coming days, with weather forecasts indicating that parts of the Canary Islands could experience some of the hottest conditions seen so far this summer.

Meteorologists are tracking a mass of hot air moving north from Africa, which is expected to push temperatures well above seasonal averages across parts of Spain and the Canary Islands. While Lanzarote is unlikely to experience the extreme 40°C-plus temperatures forecast for some mainland regions, inland areas and sheltered locations could see temperatures climb above 35°C during the warmest part of the week.

What Can Tourists Expect in Lanzarote?

Popular coastal resorts such as Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise will benefit from cooling Atlantic breezes, helping to keep temperatures slightly lower than inland areas. However, holidaymakers should still expect very warm conditions, especially between midday and late afternoon.

The combination of strong sunshine, light winds and occasional Saharan air intrusions can make the heat feel more intense than the thermometer suggests. In previous heat episodes, temperatures on Lanzarote have exceeded 34°C, particularly away from the coast.

Health Advice for Residents and Visitors

Local authorities and health experts recommend taking sensible precautions during periods of high temperatures:

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight between 12pm and 5pm.
  • Wear lightweight clothing, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen.
  • Check on elderly relatives, neighbours and vulnerable individuals.
  • Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles.

Those planning outdoor activities such as hiking in Timanfaya National Park, cycling, or exploring Lanzarote’s volcanic landscapes should consider setting off early in the morning when temperatures are lower.

Impact on Tourism and Outdoor Activities

Despite the heat, Lanzarote remains one of Europe’s most attractive summer destinations thanks to its unique climate. The island’s Atlantic location often provides more comfortable conditions than many mainland Spanish destinations, where temperatures are forecast to exceed 40°C in some regions.

Beachgoers can still enjoy the island’s coastline, but should take extra care with sun exposure, as UV levels remain extremely high throughout the summer months.

Water sports, boat excursions and evening dining are expected to remain popular options during the hotter days, while many visitors may choose to explore attractions such as César Manrique’s cultural sites during cooler morning hours.

Will the Heatwave Last?

Current forecast models suggest the warm spell could continue for several days before temperatures gradually ease later in the week. Weather conditions can change quickly in the Canary Islands, so both residents and tourists are encouraged to monitor local forecasts for the latest updates.

Lanzarote Weather Outlook

While the island is no stranger to warm summer weather, this latest heat event serves as a reminder of the importance of staying hydrated, protecting yourself from the sun, and planning outdoor activities carefully.

For visitors, the good news is that Lanzarote’s coastal breezes, beautiful beaches and outdoor lifestyle continue to make it one of the most comfortable summer destinations in Europe, even when temperatures rise.
