Lanzarote Braces for Rising Temperatures as Spain’s Fourth Heatwave Approaches

Residents and visitors in Lanzarote are being advised to prepare for a spell of hotter weather as Spain’s fourth official heatwave of the summer develops later this week.

According to Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), the heatwave is expected to begin on Wednesday and continue through the weekend. While the most extreme temperatures are forecast across mainland Spain, where some areas could exceed 40°C, the Canary Islands are also expected to experience a noticeable rise in temperatures.

What Does This Mean for Lanzarote?

Unlike parts of mainland Spain, Lanzarote benefits from the cooling influence of the Atlantic Ocean and the trade winds. However, when hot air from North Africa moves across the islands, temperatures can climb quickly, particularly in sheltered inland areas where conditions are often warmer than along the coast.

Current forecasts suggest:

  • A gradual increase in daytime temperatures from Wednesday onwards.
  • The warmest conditions are expected between Thursday and Saturday.
  • Coastal resorts are likely to remain more comfortable than inland locations, although temperatures will still feel significantly warmer than usual.
  • UV levels will remain extremely high, meaning sun protection is essential even if skies appear hazy.

Heat Warnings Across the Canary Islands

AEMET has already issued a yellow weather warning for parts of Gran Canaria, where temperatures could reach 35°C. While Lanzarote is not currently under the same warning, meteorologists will continue monitoring conditions as the hot air mass moves across the archipelago, and forecasts may change over the coming days.

Increased Wildfire Risk

Periods of prolonged heat, combined with dry vegetation and low humidity, significantly increase the risk of wildfires across Spain and the Canary Islands.

Although Lanzarote has far less woodland than many other islands, authorities still encourage everyone to act responsibly by avoiding activities that could accidentally start a fire, especially in rural areas. Across Spain, emergency services remain on high alert due to the elevated wildfire risk during the heatwave.

Advice for Residents and Tourists

If you’re spending time in Lanzarote this week:

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the afternoon.
  • Wear light clothing, a hat and high-factor sunscreen.
  • Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.
  • Check on elderly relatives or neighbours who may be more vulnerable to high temperatures.
  • If you’re heading out walking or exploring the island, take more water than you think you’ll need.

Will Lanzarote Reach 37°C?

The widely shared figure of 37°C relates primarily to forecast temperatures in parts of Gran Canaria and some inland areas of the eastern Canary Islands during this heat episode, rather than being a forecast specifically for Lanzarote. Temperatures on Lanzarote are expected to rise, but local conditions can vary considerably depending on wind direction, cloud cover and location across the island.

Stay Updated

Weather forecasts can change rapidly during heatwave events. Visitors planning hikes, cycling trips or outdoor excursions should keep an eye on the latest forecasts and any official weather warnings issued by AEMET before travelling.
