Lanzarote Crime Falls in First Half of 2026

Lanzarote’s overall crime figures fell during the first six months of 2026, although the latest figures also highlight increases in some categories that residents and visitors should be aware of.

According to figures from Spain’s Ministry of the Interior and information discussed by the Island Directorate of the General State Administration in Lanzarote, recorded crime on the island was 3.9% lower between January and June 2026 than during the same period in 2025.

The headline figure gives a useful snapshot of crime in Lanzarote, but the detailed figures show a more mixed picture.

CONVENTIONAL CRIME AND CYBERCRIME BOTH FALL

Conventional crime in Lanzarote fell by 2.6% during the first half of 2026. Cybercrime also moved down, with reported cyber offences falling by 14.1% compared with the first six months of 2025.

Across the island, 3,607 criminal offences were recorded during the first half of 2026. The quarterly figures show 1,712 offences in the first quarter and 1,895 in the second quarter.

The Ministry of the Interior’s criminality statistics are compiled from information supplied by the Policía Nacional, Guardia Civil and other police forces contributing data to Spain’s Statistical Crime System. The figures therefore refer to recorded offences rather than an estimate of every incident that may have occurred.

SEXUAL OFFENCES SHOW AN INCREASE

One of the clearest changes in the Lanzarote crime figures concerns offences against sexual freedom and sexual integrity.

There were 59 recorded offences in this category during the first six months of 2026, compared with 35 during the same period of 2025.

HOW DO LANZAROTE’S MAIN AREAS COMPARE?

The picture also varies between municipalities.

In Tías, which includes the popular tourist resort of Puerto del Carmen, conventional crime fell by more than 10% during the period. Teguise recorded a smaller fall of 0.3%, while Arrecife saw conventional crime increase by 6.5%.

For tourists staying in Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise, Playa Blanca, Arrecife and other parts of Lanzarote, these figures should be viewed in context. Tourist areas have large numbers of visitors moving through them every day, and the island’s crime statistics cover residents, workers and visitors rather than tourists alone.

LANZAROTE’S CRIME RATE REMAINS BELOW THE CANARY ISLANDS AND NATIONAL AVERAGE

The reported crime rate in Lanzarote stood at 44 offences per 1,000 inhabitants. The Island Directorate said this was below both the Canary Islands and national averages.

Another figure highlighted in the latest assessment was the clearance rate. Around 60% of recorded offences were described as being solved or clarified, meaning that approximately six in ten offences had been cleared according to the measure used by the authorities.

MORE POLICE RESOURCES ON THE ISLAND

The latest figures also come as Lanzarote has more state security personnel than it did several years ago. The Island Directorate reported that the number of Policía Nacional and Guardia Civil personnel assigned to Lanzarote is around 13% higher than in 2017.

Officials have stressed the importance of prevention, investigation, cooperation between police forces and collaboration from residents and visitors.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR TOURISTS IN LANZAROTE?

As in any busy holiday destination, visitors should take sensible precautions. Keep wallets, phones and passports secure, avoid leaving valuables visible in hire cars, use hotel or accommodation safes where available, and take extra care with personal belongings in busy nightlife areas, beaches, promenades and crowded events.

If you are hiring a car in Lanzarote, never leave luggage, cameras or other valuables on display. Even when overall crime levels are falling, property crime can affect individual visitors and residents.

For residents, the same basic precautions apply, alongside reporting suspicious activity to the appropriate authorities rather than taking matters into your own hands.

THE BIGGER PICTURE FOR LANZAROTE

The first-half figures present a mixed picture rather than a simple rise or fall in crime. Overall recorded crime in Lanzarote decreased by 3.9%, conventional crime fell by 2.6%, and cybercrime dropped by 14.1%. At the same time, offences against sexual freedom and sexual integrity increased significantly.

For tourists and residents alike, the most useful message is that crime statistics need to be looked at by category and location rather than reduced to a single headline percentage.

Lanzarote remains a busy international holiday destination, and sensible everyday precautions are still worthwhile. The authorities say they will continue monitoring crime trends and coordinating prevention, investigation and policing across the island.
