Lanzarote Drug Arrests After Routine Vehicle Stop Lead to Wider Investigation

Two people have been arrested in Lanzarote following a routine vehicle stop that developed into a wider investigation into suspected drug trafficking, according to information released about the Guardia Civil operation.

The incident began when Guardia Civil officers were carrying out a preventive surveillance operation aimed at detecting suspected drug-trafficking activity. A vehicle was stopped and both occupants were identified. After officers detected indications that prompted further checks, the vehicle was searched.

Drugs and cash discovered during vehicle search

The search led officers to find hashish that had reportedly been concealed inside the vehicle, along with cash.

Further investigation and searches subsequently resulted in the seizure of 4,901 grams of hashish, 744 grams of cocaine and €5,130 in cash.

The two occupants were arrested on suspicion of an offence against public health, with the investigation continuing to establish the origin of the substances and the intended destination of the money.

Search warrants issued as investigation expanded

According to the information released about the case, investigators then identified possible links between the suspects and other properties, vehicles and items.

Following judicial authorisation, several searches were carried out at locations allegedly connected with the investigation. During those searches, officers seized a number of items that could be relevant to the case.

These included several mobile phones, satellite communication terminals, a precision weighing scale, anabolic substances and a detonating weapon, described in some reporting as a blank-firing weapon.

A vehicle and a semi-rigid boat were also seized because investigators considered that they could be connected with the events under investigation or could help establish how the alleged activity was being carried out. Both were placed at the disposal of the judicial authorities for further technical and expert checks.

The case goes before the courts

The two detainees, together with the police proceedings prepared during the investigation, were placed at the disposal of the Instruction Section of the Court of First Instance in Arrecife.

At this stage, the allegations remain allegations. An arrest or detention does not establish guilt, and the investigation and any subsequent judicial proceedings will determine the facts of the case.

The operation is part of wider law-enforcement activity against suspected drug trafficking in the Canary Islands. Lanzarote's position in the Atlantic and its links by air and sea make the prevention and detection of illegal drug movements an ongoing policing issue.

This is a developing legal matter, and further information may emerge as the investigation and judicial process continue.
