Lanzarote Fuel Prices Overtake Fuerteventura As Motorists Feel The Squeeze

Drivers in Lanzarote are paying more at the pump than those in neighbouring Fuerteventura, with the latest figures showing fuel prices on the island have climbed sharply over recent months.

The increase is being felt by residents, businesses that rely on transport, and tourists planning to hire a car during their holiday. While fuel prices fluctuate from week to week, the latest data suggests Lanzarote is no longer among the cheapest Canary Islands for petrol and diesel.

Why Have Fuel Prices Increased In Lanzarote?

According to the latest available figures, the average price of 95-octane petrol in Lanzarote reached around €1.45 per litre during July, compared with approximately €1.39 in Fuerteventura. Diesel prices have also risen, averaging around €1.50 per litre on Lanzarote, making them higher than those in both Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria.

One of the biggest reasons behind the increase has been higher international oil prices following geopolitical tensions in the Middle East earlier this year, particularly disruption to shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz. These global events have pushed wholesale fuel costs higher across Europe, with the Canary Islands also feeling the impact.

Where Can You Find The Cheapest Fuel In Lanzarote?

Although prices vary between filling stations, motorists can still make worthwhile savings by shopping around.

This week’s lower-priced fuel has been found at Plenergy stations in Arrecife, where both unleaded petrol and diesel are among the cheapest available on the island. Meanwhile, some motorway and premium-brand stations continue to charge noticeably more for the same fuel.

The difference between the cheapest and most expensive stations can amount to more than 15 cents per litre, meaning filling a typical 50-litre tank could cost over €7 extra simply by choosing a different forecourt.

What Does This Mean For Tourists?

For visitors hiring a car in Lanzarote, fuel still compares favourably with many parts of mainland Europe and the UK. However, anyone planning longer trips around the island may want to fill up before setting off and compare prices using local fuel price apps or online comparison tools.

Popular routes to attractions such as Timanfaya National Park, Playa Blanca, Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen, and Mirador del Río can quickly add up if fuel prices continue to rise.

Will Prices Fall Again?

Fuel prices are notoriously unpredictable and depend largely on global oil markets, exchange rates and transport costs. If international oil prices ease, motorists could eventually see prices begin to stabilise. However, if geopolitical tensions remain high, drivers should be prepared for continued volatility over the coming weeks and months.

The Bottom Line

Although Lanzarote fuel prices have risen significantly this year, the island remains a relatively small destination where most journeys are short. Even with higher petrol and diesel prices, many visitors will still spend considerably less on fuel than they would during a comparable holiday involving longer road trips elsewhere.

For residents, however, the continued increase is another reminder of the wider impact rising global energy costs are having on everyday living expenses.
