Lanzarote Heat Alert Downgraded as Temperatures Begin to Ease

The Canary Islands Government has downgraded the heat alert for Lanzarote and La Graciosa to a pre-alert, following updated forecasts from Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET). While the worst of the recent heatwave is expected to ease, residents and visitors are still being advised to take precautions as temperatures remain well above average in parts of the island.

Heatwave Continues, But Less Intense

According to the latest forecast, the intense spell of hot weather affecting the Canary Islands is expected to continue, although conditions in Lanzarote will gradually become less severe from Thursday onwards.

The change means that from 5:00 pm on Wednesday, the island officially moved from a heat alert to a pre-alert, reflecting a lower level of risk while recognising that hot conditions are still expected.

Temperatures Could Still Reach 34°C

Despite the downgrade, parts of Lanzarote are still forecast to experience temperatures of up to 34°C, particularly across the southern half of the island, where inland areas often become significantly hotter than the coast.

Popular tourist destinations such as Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca, Puerto Calero and parts of Yaiza Municipality may continue to experience very warm daytime conditions, especially during the afternoon.

Other Canary Islands Remain Under Higher Alerts

While Lanzarote’s warning level has been reduced, other islands continue to face more severe conditions.

Heat alerts remain in place for parts of Gran Canaria and La Palma, where temperatures are expected to stay higher for longer. Officials are also concerned about very warm overnight temperatures, particularly in inland and poorly ventilated areas, making it difficult for people to cool down and recover from the daytime heat.

Advice for Residents and Holidaymakers

Even under a pre-alert, high temperatures can still pose health risks, particularly for:

  • Young children
  • Older adults
  • Pregnant women
  • Anyone with underlying health conditions
  • People working or exercising outdoors

Authorities recommend:

  • Drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Avoiding strenuous activity during the hottest hours, generally between midday and early evening.
  • Wearing lightweight clothing and a hat.
  • Using sunscreen with a high SPF.
  • Never leaving children or pets inside parked vehicles.
  • Checking on elderly neighbours or vulnerable family members during periods of extreme heat.

What This Means for Visitors

For tourists currently enjoying a holiday in Lanzarote, the downgrade is welcome news, but the island will still be experiencing typical summer heat.

Beach visits, sightseeing and outdoor activities are best planned for the morning or later in the evening, while the middle of the day is ideal for relaxing in shaded areas, taking a dip in the sea or enjoying air-conditioned attractions.

As always, weather conditions can change quickly, so it’s worth keeping an eye on the latest official forecasts if you’re planning hiking trips, cycling excursions or other outdoor adventures.
