Lanzarote Heatwave Alert: Temperatures Expected to Climb Above 34°C Next Week

Lanzarote is preparing for a spell of very hot weather as the Canary Islands enter what could be the first significant heatwave of the summer. The latest forecasts indicate that temperatures will rise steadily over the coming days, with inland parts of the island expected to exceed 34°C early next week.

Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has already issued a yellow weather warning for high temperatures affecting Lanzarote, with the warning covering the hottest part of the day in inland and southern areas of the island.

What Weather Can We Expect in Lanzarote?

Current forecasts suggest the heat will gradually build through the weekend before peaking between Monday and Wednesday.

Expected daytime temperatures include:

  • Saturday: Around 27°C
  • Sunday: Around 28°C
  • Monday: Around 31°C, with 34°C possible inland
  • Tuesday: Around 32°C
  • Wednesday: Up to 35°C
  • Thursday: Cooler conditions returning, around 25°C

As always in Lanzarote, coastal resorts such as Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise, Playa Blanca, and Arrecife are likely to benefit from cooling sea breezes, while inland locations including La Geria, Teguise, and areas around Timanfaya National Park could experience noticeably higher temperatures.

Very Warm Days and Tropical Nights

Although Lanzarote is not expected to experience the extreme overnight temperatures forecast for some of the larger Canary Islands, nights are still expected to remain unusually warm, with temperatures staying in the low to mid-20s in many areas.

Combined with the daytime heat, this may make sleeping uncomfortable for some residents and visitors, particularly where accommodation does not have air conditioning.

Stay Safe During the Heat

Whether you’re enjoying a beach holiday or exploring the island, it’s worth taking a few extra precautions:

  • Drink water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during the hottest hours, generally between 12pm and 5pm.
  • Wear lightweight clothing, sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Apply high-factor sunscreen throughout the day.
  • Carry extra water if you’re visiting volcanic or inland areas.
  • Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles.

Visitors planning excursions to attractions such as Timanfaya National Park, La Geria, or hiking routes should remember that volcanic landscapes absorb and radiate heat, making conditions feel even hotter than along the coast.

UV Levels Remain Extremely High

In addition to the rising temperatures, UV levels across Lanzarote are expected to remain very high, meaning sunburn can occur in as little as 15 to 20 minutes during the middle of the day.

Forecasts Can Change

While confidence is growing that Lanzarote will experience a notable hot spell, exact temperatures may still vary slightly over the next few days. Meteorologists will continue to monitor the situation, and any official weather warnings will be updated if conditions become more severe.

For now, residents and visitors are encouraged to enjoy the sunshine while taking sensible precautions to stay cool and hydrated.
