Lanzarote Launches €600,000 Tourism Modernisation Plans for Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise

Lanzarote is taking another significant step towards shaping the future of two of its most popular holiday destinations, with a €600,000 contract now out to tender for the preparation of new tourism modernisation plans for Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise. The project is designed to ensure both resorts continue to evolve while maintaining the qualities that have made them favourites with visitors from around the world.

What Is Being Planned?

The Cabildo of Lanzarote has officially launched the tender process to appoint specialist teams that will prepare comprehensive plans for the future development of both resorts.

Rather than funding construction work itself, the €600,000 investment will pay for the technical studies, legal assessments, environmental reports and planning documents needed to guide future improvements. The successful contractor will also provide technical support throughout the approval process.

Why Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise?

Both Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise are among Lanzarote’s busiest tourist destinations, welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.

Many areas have developed over several decades, and the new plans aim to ensure future improvements are carefully managed rather than carried out on an ad-hoc basis. The objective is to create modern, attractive and sustainable resorts that continue to meet the expectations of both residents and holidaymakers.

What Could Change?

Although no construction projects have yet been approved, the planning documents are expected to examine areas including:

  • Improvements to public spaces and promenades.
  • Better transport links and mobility.
  • Upgraded tourism infrastructure.
  • Modernisation of accommodation and tourism facilities.
  • Environmental sustainability measures.
  • Urban improvements designed to enhance the visitor experience while benefiting local communities.

For Playa Blanca, planners will first need to define exactly where the modernisation plan will apply, taking into account the area’s current legal and planning framework before recommending future developments.

Who Is Responsible?

The Cabildo of Lanzarote will oversee the technical preparation of both plans, while the Government of the Canary Islands will remain responsible for the formal approval process once the documents have been completed.

The contract is being awarded through an open tender process, allowing specialist multidisciplinary planning teams to compete for the work.

What Does This Mean for Tourists?

If you’re planning a holiday to Lanzarote, there will be no immediate disruption.

This announcement marks the beginning of a planning process rather than the start of building work. Visitors can continue enjoying Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise as normal while the long-term vision for both resorts is developed.

In the future, tourists could benefit from:

  • More attractive public areas.
  • Improved accessibility.
  • Better walking and cycling routes.
  • Enhanced tourism facilities.
  • Modern infrastructure that keeps both resorts competitive with other European holiday destinations.

What Does It Mean for Residents?

For local residents and businesses, these plans could help shape how both resorts grow over the next decade.

Well-designed planning documents can help balance tourism with everyday life by improving public spaces, encouraging sustainable transport and ensuring future developments fit within Lanzarote’s unique landscape and planning policies.

As with most major planning initiatives, further public consultation and administrative approvals are expected before any physical projects begin.

Looking Ahead

Tourism remains the backbone of Lanzarote’s economy, and keeping the island’s resorts attractive, accessible and environmentally responsible is becoming increasingly important.

The launch of these new modernisation plans signals a long-term commitment to ensuring Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise continue to evolve while protecting the qualities that make Lanzarote one of Europe’s most popular year-round holiday destinations.
