Lanzarote Search Ends in Tragedy After Missing Man Found Deceased Near La Santa
A search operation in Lanzarote has ended with the discovery of a man's body on the island's northwest coast, after his family reported him missing the previous day.
Emergency services located the man, who was around 60 years old, on Friday 18 September in a difficult-to-reach coastal area near La Santa, in the municipality of Tinajo.
According to information published by La Voz de Lanzarote, the man's family reported him missing on Thursday, prompting a search operation to be launched.
Emergency services used a drone during the search, which helped locate him in the rugged coastal area. Firefighters were also involved, while the Government of the Canary Islands' GES helicopter was activated to assist with recovering the body from the difficult terrain.
The Guardia Civil has opened an investigation
The territorial judicial police team of the Guardia Civil based in Costa Teguise attended the scene and has taken charge of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man's death.
At this stage, the cause of death has not been established.
No further details about the man's identity have been released publicly.
The location near La Santa is part of Lanzarote's rugged northwest coastline, an area known for volcanic terrain, exposed coastal paths and difficult-to-access sections. The search demonstrates the challenges emergency services can face when responding to incidents in remote parts of the island.
For residents and visitors in Lanzarote, it is a reminder that coastal areas away from established paths and beaches can present difficult terrain, particularly where access for emergency vehicles is limited.
Investigation will continue
The Guardia Civil investigation remains ongoing and further information may be released once the circumstances surrounding the death are established.
