Lanzarote Set to Enjoy Another Celestial Spectacle as Partial Lunar Eclipse Arrives This August

Just days after residents and visitors looked to the skies to witness the impressive partial solar eclipse over Lanzarote, another astronomical event is on the way. In the early hours of Friday, 28 August 2026, a partial lunar eclipse will be visible across the Canary Islands, giving night sky enthusiasts another reason to look up.

Unlike a solar eclipse, which requires special eye protection, a lunar eclipse is completely safe to watch with the naked eye. Whether you’re a keen stargazer or simply curious, this is expected to be one of the final major astronomical highlights of the summer.

What Is a Partial Lunar Eclipse?

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow across the Moon’s surface. During a partial lunar eclipse, only part of the Moon moves into Earth’s darkest shadow (known as the umbra), while the rest remains illuminated.

Because sunlight passes through Earth’s atmosphere before reaching the Moon, the eclipsed section can take on beautiful orange and reddish tones, creating a dramatic display against the night sky.

When Can You See It in Lanzarote?

For viewers in the Canary Islands, the eclipse is expected to follow this approximate schedule (local WEST time):

  • Penumbral phase begins: 2:23am
  • Partial eclipse begins: 4:12am
  • Maximum eclipse: Around 5:12am
  • Partial eclipse ends: 6:13am
  • Penumbral phase ends: 7:59am

The most impressive part of the event will be around 5:12am, when a large portion of the Moon will be inside Earth’s shadow.

Where Is the Best Place to Watch?

Lanzarote’s low light pollution makes it one of the best places in Europe for stargazing.

Some excellent viewing locations include:

  • Mirador del Río
  • Famara coastline
  • Timanfaya National Park surroundings (outside protected areas)
  • Los Hervideros
  • La Geria vineyards
  • Any quiet beach or elevated viewpoint away from street lighting

If skies remain clear, visitors should enjoy an excellent view without needing telescopes or binoculars, although these can reveal more detail.

Do You Need Special Glasses?

No.

Unlike a solar eclipse, you do not need eclipse glasses or any other protective equipment to watch a lunar eclipse. It is perfectly safe to observe with the naked eye, making it an ideal event for families, photographers and anyone enjoying Lanzarote’s famous clear skies.

A Great Month for Astronomy in Lanzarote

August has been an exciting month for astronomy across Spain and the Canary Islands. The recent partial solar eclipse attracted thousands of people outdoors, while the Perseid meteor shower also lit up the island’s skies.

The upcoming lunar eclipse offers another opportunity for residents and holidaymakers to experience Lanzarote’s exceptional night skies, which continue to make the island a favourite destination for astro-tourism.

Whether you’re a visitor making memories or a resident who enjoys the island’s natural beauty, the partial lunar eclipse promises to be another unforgettable moment beneath Lanzarote’s skies.
