Lanzarote Steps Up Hunting Ground Inspections Ahead of 2026 Season
The Cabildo of Lanzarote has launched a series of inspections across the island’s hunting grounds ahead of the start of the 2026 hunting season, with a strong focus on ensuring hunters comply with environmental regulations.
The operation is being coordinated by the island’s Environment Department, with support from environmental officers and specially trained detection dogs capable of locating poisoned bait and hidden illegal traps. The inspections are designed to identify prohibited hunting methods before the season begins, helping to protect Lanzarote’s unique wildlife and natural habitats.
What Inspectors Are Looking For
Inspection teams will be checking hunting areas for a range of banned practices, including:
- Poisoned bait.
- Wire snares.
- Leg-hold traps.
- Other illegal trapping devices.
- Hunting activity in protected or restricted areas.
- Compliance with closed-season regulations.
The specially trained canine unit plays an important role, as the dogs can detect poisoned bait that may be hidden in remote areas. These substances pose a serious risk not only to wildlife but also to domestic animals such as dogs that may accidentally come into contact with them.
Protecting Lanzarote’s Wildlife
Poisoned bait and indiscriminate traps are considered among the greatest threats to birds of prey, native wildlife and protected species throughout Spain. Unlike legal hunting methods, poisoned bait can kill any animal that encounters it, disrupting the island’s delicate ecosystem.
Environmental authorities say the inspections are intended to prevent offences before they happen rather than simply issue penalties after the fact. By carrying out checks before hunting activity begins, officials hope to ensure a safer season for both wildlife and responsible hunters.
2026 Hunting Season Dates
According to the current hunting calendar:
- Rabbit hunting is scheduled to run from 16 August until 29 November, with hunting permitted on Thursdays and Sundays.
- The Moroccan partridge and rock pigeon season is expected to run from 20 September to 22 November, with hunting allowed on Sundays and two designated Thursdays during October.
Why This Matters
While hunting remains a regulated activity in Lanzarote, the island’s authorities are placing increasing emphasis on conservation and responsible land management. Illegal traps and poisoned bait can have devastating consequences, not only for protected wildlife but also for pets, livestock and the wider environment.
Residents and visitors enjoying Lanzarote’s countryside are encouraged to report any suspected illegal traps or poisoned bait to the relevant authorities and avoid touching suspicious materials if discovered.
As the 2026 hunting season approaches, these inspections highlight Lanzarote’s ongoing commitment to balancing traditional hunting activities with the protection of its unique natural environment.
What Do You Think?
Hunting is an issue that continues to divide opinion, both in Lanzarote and across the world. Supporters argue that regulated hunting is part of the island’s long-standing traditions and can help manage certain animal populations. Others believe that society is moving towards stronger animal welfare standards and that hunting no longer has a place in the modern world.
With authorities increasing inspections to crack down on illegal practices and better protect wildlife, the wider debate is likely to continue.
