Lanzarote Surfers Unite in Emotional Sea Tribute to Jorge Acosta in Caleta Caballo

Around 150 surfers gathered off the coast of Caleta Caballo on Sunday to remember much-loved local surfer Jorge Acosta, who died while surfing in the Maldives earlier this year.
The surf community in Lanzarote came together at Caleta Caballo on Sunday, 13 September, for a moving tribute to local surfer Jorge Acosta, bringing together surfers and friends from across the island.
Around 150 people from Caleta Caballo, Famara and San Juan took part in the emotional gathering, which was held in the sea and followed the tradition of a Hawaiian-style surfer's farewell.

A farewell at sea

The tribute saw surfers form a circle in the water before placing a bouquet of flowers in the centre. A few words were then spoken in memory of Jorge as those gathered said their final goodbye.
The ceremony reflected the close relationship between Lanzarote's surfing community and the Atlantic Ocean.
Rather than being a formal public event, it was a gathering of friends, fellow surfers and members of the local communities who knew Jorge and wanted to remember him in an environment that had been such an important part of his life.

Remembering Jorge Acosta

Jorge Acosta was 53 when he died in May 2026 while surfing in the Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll in the Maldives.
Reports at the time stated that the Lanzarote-born surfer had travelled to the Maldives aboard a tourist safari boat, a type of trip popular with surfers visiting the country's reef breaks. He had travelled to an area close to Vaadhoo, a location known among surfers.
Acosta was well known within the Lanzarote surfing community, particularly around Caleta Caballo and La Santa.
His death caused considerable sadness across the island's surfing scene. The Lanzarote Quemao Class also paid tribute to him following his death, recognising him as a much-loved friend of the local surfing community.

Caleta Caballo's strong connection with surfing

The choice of Caleta Caballo for the memorial was particularly fitting.
The small coastal settlement on Lanzarote's northern coast is associated with surfing and other water sports, with its coastline attracting surfers and bodyboarders. Its proximity to other important surf areas, including Famara and La Santa, has helped make this part of Lanzarote particularly significant within the island's surfing culture.
For visitors discovering surfing in Lanzarote, the island offers a very different experience from the traditional beach holiday. Surf culture is deeply embedded in several coastal communities, with local surfers, instructors and water-sports enthusiasts forming an important part of island life.

A community brought together by the ocean

The gathering in Caleta Caballo also highlighted something visitors to Lanzarote may not immediately see.
Behind the island's reputation for sunshine, beaches and tourism is a network of close-knit local communities, particularly around its coastline. Surfing has created its own community of residents, visiting surfers, instructors and water-sports enthusiasts.
For the approximately 150 surfers who entered the water for the tribute, the ceremony provided an opportunity to celebrate Jorge's life and his connection with the sea.

A fitting farewell in Lanzarote

Lanzarote has long attracted surfers from around the world because of its volcanic coastline, Atlantic swells and established surf culture.
