Lanzarote Warns Drone Users: Protect the Island’s Birds and Wildlife

Lanzarote’s dramatic volcanic landscapes and coastline are a dream to photograph, and drones can capture views that are difficult to achieve from the ground. But the island’s authorities have issued a fresh reminder that drone flights can disturb wild birds, particularly in protected natural areas and other locations where wildlife is vulnerable.

The warning, issued by the Lanzarote and La Graciosa Island Council (Cabildo) on 22 October 2026, follows checks into possible breaches of environmental conditions attached to some recent activities and events. The Council says the relevant checks are under way and that administrative action may follow if breaches are established.

Why drones can disturb birds

Even when a drone never touches an animal, its noise, closeness and sudden movements can cause birds to become stressed or take flight. Disturbance can interrupt feeding and resting, and may affect breeding behaviour. In nesting areas, birds leaving temporarily can expose eggs and chicks to additional risks.

These concerns are particularly important in places used by birds for shelter, feeding, resting or breeding. Lanzarote’s natural landscapes are part of what makes the island special, and protecting them helps preserve the experience for residents and visitors alike.

Drone rules in Lanzarote: check before you fly

Drone use is subject to aviation rules as well as environmental restrictions. Lanzarote Film Commission guidance explains that many areas have protected status or are included in Special Protection Areas for Birds. Additional permissions may be required for flights in protected areas, where flying is permitted at all. Requirements depend on the exact location and type of operation.

Timanfaya National Park has particularly strict rules: recreational drone use is generally prohibited, with only limited authorised uses for purposes such as management, research or emergencies under specific conditions.

Before launching a drone in Lanzarote:
• Check the official ENAIRE Drones map and current airspace restrictions.
• Review AESA’s rules for your drone and the type of flight you intend to make.
• Check whether the location is protected and whether environmental or municipal authorisation is required.
• Read and follow every condition attached to any permit.
• Keep well away from birds and nesting sites, and land immediately if your flight is disturbing wildlife.

These steps apply whether you are a holidaymaker hoping to capture a memorable view, a local resident, a photographer, a film crew or an event organiser. A location that looks open and remote is not necessarily a place where drone flights are allowed.

Enjoy Lanzarote responsibly

The island’s volcanic scenery, cliffs, coastlines and wildlife are valuable natural assets. Responsible photography means planning ahead, respecting restricted areas and choosing another viewpoint when a drone flight could disturb birds or damage a sensitive habitat.

If you are visiting Lanzarote and want aerial photographs, do not assume that being a recreational pilot makes every location available. Check the current official guidance before you travel to a site, and do not fly where permission is required but has not been granted.
