Lanzarote Water Cuts: Seven Areas Without Supply This Tuesday

Residents and visitors in parts of San Bartolomé, Teguise and Tinajo are facing scheduled water supply interruptions on Tuesday 1 September as Lanzarote continues to deal with pressure on its water resources.

Lanzarote has started September with further water supply cuts, with seven local areas affected by planned interruptions on Tuesday, 1 September 2026.

According to the latest information published by Aguas de Lanzarote y La Graciosa, the scheduled interruptions affect parts of San Bartolomé, Teguise and Tinajo. The published timetable lists the affected locations as San Bartolomé, Güime, El Islote, Tomaren, Tao, Tinajo and El Cuchillo.

For people living in these areas, as well as visitors staying in rural accommodation or holiday properties, it is worth checking the latest water-supply information before making plans for the day.

The official planning information gives the scheduled interruption as running from 00:00 to 23:59 on 1 September. These are listed as programmed interruptions under the monthly water-supply plan.

The interruptions therefore cover three municipalities: San Bartolomé, Teguise and Tinajo.

What does this mean for residents and tourists?

A scheduled water cut does not necessarily mean that every property within the wider municipality will be affected.

The Lanzarote water network operates through a system of main and secondary storage facilities, meaning supply conditions can vary between individual areas and properties.

For residents, the most sensible precaution is to have enough water available for drinking, cooking and essential household needs before a planned interruption begins.

Visitors staying in villas, apartments or rural accommodation should also check directly with their accommodation provider if they are staying in one of the affected areas.

Hotels and larger tourist complexes may have their own storage arrangements, so a scheduled interruption in a particular locality does not automatically mean that holidaymakers throughout the area will be without water.

Why are water cuts continuing in Lanzarote?

The latest interruptions come against the backdrop of a continuing water emergency in Lanzarote and La Graciosa.

The Canary Islands Official Gazette published the third six-month extension of the island’s water-emergency declaration on 31 August. The extension was approved by the Island Water Council following a request from the Consorcio del Agua de Lanzarote.

The situation has been made more difficult during periods of high demand.

Aguas de Lanzarote y La Graciosa previously explained that particularly high temperatures, combined with increased summer demand, have made it harder for some storage reservoirs to recover their normal levels between supply periods.

The island’s water system relies heavily on desalination and a network of storage reservoirs. Water produced at major facilities is distributed through the island’s network before reaching individual towns and communities.

Water supply in Lanzarote remains a major issue

The latest cuts are another reminder that water shortages in Lanzarote remain an important issue for both the local population and the tourism industry.

Lanzarote has been working on improvements to its water infrastructure, including the replacement of ageing sections of the distribution network. Recent projects have included work in areas such as Soo and Tiagua, where the aim is to reduce breakdowns and improve the reliability of the water supply.

The island has also increased water production in recent years. The Government of the Canary Islands said in March that production had increased by around 7,800 cubic metres per day compared with 2023, representing an increase of approximately 12%.

However, the continuing emergency declaration demonstrates that the island’s water infrastructure remains under pressure.

How can you check if your Lanzarote property is affected?

The official Aguas de Lanzarote y La Graciosa portal provides the most up-to-date information about scheduled interruptions, breakdowns and changes to the supply network.

Importantly, the water company warns that planned interruptions can change because of operational requirements, network problems or other unexpected circumstances.

For that reason, residents and visitors should check the latest information rather than relying solely on a previously published timetable.

What should you do if you are affected by a water cut?

If you live in one of the affected areas, a little preparation can make the interruption considerably easier.

Before the water goes off:

  • Keep drinking water available.
  • Fill any household storage tank if appropriate.
  • Avoid running washing machines or dishwashers during the interruption.
  • If you run a business, plan ahead for food preparation and cleaning requirements.
  • If you are staying in holiday accommodation, ask your host whether the property has a private water tank.

Once supply returns, the water may not come back at exactly the same time or pressure for every property. Aguas de Lanzarote explains that restoration can be progressive because of the characteristics of the distribution network.

More Lanzarote water cuts could follow

The September schedule shows that these interruptions are not limited to Tuesday 1 September.

Further programmed interruptions are currently listed throughout September, including areas of Tías, Yaiza, Haría, Teguise, San Bartolomé and Tinajo on different dates.

This means that anyone living in Lanzarote, or planning a visit to the island, should get into the habit of checking the official water-supply information if they are staying outside the main tourist resorts.

Lanzarote water cuts – the bigger picture

For tourists, a water interruption in one part of Lanzarote does not mean the whole island is experiencing a water outage. The scheduled cuts are localised, and the majority of tourist areas may continue operating normally.

For residents, however, the continuing interruptions highlight the longer-term challenge facing the island as Lanzarote works to improve its water infrastructure and secure a more reliable supply.

With the Lanzarote and La Graciosa water emergency now extended for another six months, water supply is likely to remain an important local issue during the months ahead.
