Lanzarote Water Supply Disruption: What Residents and Visitors Need to Know

Residents, businesses and holidaymakers in parts of Lanzarote have been affected by interruptions to the island’s water supply following electrical problems at pumping stations in Zonzamas.

The disruption began during the evening of Wednesday 23 September 2026. According to the official water service, electrical incidents at the Zonzamas pumping stations caused significant disruption to both water supply and distribution.

Which parts of Lanzarote have been affected?

The municipalities specifically identified by Aguas de Lanzarote y La Graciosa were Tías, San Bartolomé, Tinajo and Teguise. The operator warned that different areas could experience temporary interruptions or irregular water pressure while the system recovered.

The incident also came alongside scheduled water supply interruptions affecting other parts of the island. Areas mentioned in connection with those planned interruptions included Arrieta and Punta Mujeres in Haría, as well as Guatiza and Los Valles in Teguise.

For anyone staying in Lanzarote, it is worth remembering that an interruption in one part of the island does not necessarily mean the whole island is without water.

Why can water take time to return?

Getting the equipment operating again does not automatically mean that normal water pressure returns immediately.

The official explanation is that storage levels fell during the pumping problems. Once supply is restored, the distribution network needs time to refill and build up the pressure required to deliver water normally to homes and businesses.

This means that some properties can continue to experience low pressure or no water for a period after a technical fault has been repaired.

What happened after the Zonzamas fault?

Aguas de Lanzarote y La Graciosa reported on the morning of Thursday 24 September that normal supply had been restored in Tías, San Bartolomé, Tinajo and Teguise, although it warned that some areas of Tinajo, including La Costa and Tajaste, could still experience anomalies while the network recovered.

The latest reports also highlight that the island's water infrastructure remains under pressure, meaning further interruptions can occur when technical problems affect key parts of the network.

What should tourists do if their accommodation loses water?

If you are staying in a hotel, apartment, villa or holiday rental in Lanzarote and the water stops, the first step is to contact your accommodation provider. They should be able to tell you whether the problem is local to the property or part of a wider Lanzarote water outage.

It is also sensible to avoid assuming that a lack of water means there is a problem with the accommodation itself. A supply interruption or reduced pressure can affect an entire neighbourhood.

For longer stays, keeping a small reserve of drinking water is sensible, particularly during periods when water supply problems are being reported.

What should residents do?

Residents experiencing a suspected supply fault can use the official Aguas de Lanzarote y La Graciosa information channels for current notices. The service lists a 24-hour fault number for urgent water-supply incidents: 900 504 400.

The official portal also publishes information about planned suspensions, service interruptions and other water-related notices.

A wider water challenge for Lanzarote

The latest incident is more than a one-off inconvenience. Lanzarote relies heavily on desalinated water and a network of pumping, storage and distribution infrastructure. When a key installation develops an electrical or mechanical problem, the effects can spread beyond the immediate location.

Recent statements from the island's water authorities have also highlighted plans to increase production capacity, improve the network and reduce water losses. These projects are intended to give Lanzarote a greater buffer when demand is high or when unexpected faults occur.

What does this mean for visitors to Lanzarote?

For most tourists, a localised water interruption should not change holiday plans, but it can be inconvenient if it affects a hotel, villa, restaurant or other business.

If you are travelling around Lanzarote, keep an eye on local updates, particularly if you are staying in Tías, Puerto del Carmen, San Bartolomé, Tinajo, Teguise or other areas where interruptions have been reported.

It is also worth checking with your accommodation before making assumptions about how long an interruption will last. Restoration times can vary depending on the location and the pressure within the local network.
