Lanzarote Weather Update: Rain and Possible Thunderstorms Before Drier Conditions Return

Lanzarote residents and holidaymakers are being advised to keep an eye on the weather as unsettled conditions bring the possibility of heavy showers and thunderstorms to the island on Wednesday, 21 October. The Spanish State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, has issued a yellow weather warning for rain affecting Lanzarote and nearby La Graciosa. Forecasts indicate that some showers could be locally intense, with up to 15 millimetres of rain falling in one hour. The warning is expected to remain in force until 18:00 local time, although conditions can change, so check the latest official updates before heading out. The Canary Islands’ emergency authorities have also announced a pre-alert for rain across the archipelago. The forecast describes unsettled, variable conditions, with showers that may be accompanied by thunder. Rainfall is not expected to be evenly distributed, meaning one area could see a sharp downpour while another nearby spot receives very little.

What does this mean for Lanzarote today?

If you are staying in Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise, Playa Blanca or elsewhere on the island, it is worth being flexible with outdoor plans. A sunny spell does not necessarily mean the risk has passed: showers can develop quickly, and local conditions may differ from one resort or municipality to another. If you are driving, allow extra time and take care on roads that become wet or slippery. Avoid driving through water covering the road, and never walk or drive through flowing floodwater. Keep away from barrancos and other channels where water can rise quickly during heavy rain. If thunder develops, move away from exposed coastal areas and open ground and follow instructions from local authorities.

Will the weather improve on Friday?

The forecast highlighted in local reporting points towards drier conditions returning on Friday, 23 October. This is an outlook rather than a guarantee, so visitors and residents should check the latest AEMET forecast and warnings as the week progresses. Even when the showers clear, cloud and breezy spells may still affect how the day feels.

Making the most of a rainy day in Lanzarote

Rainy weather is unusual enough to disrupt beach plans, but it does not have to spoil a holiday. Consider a leisurely lunch, a visit to a museum or gallery, or exploring local shops and indoor attractions. If you are planning a hike, boat trip or other outdoor activity, confirm with the operator that it is going ahead and follow any safety advice. Lanzarote’s volcanic landscape can look striking under dramatic skies, but this is a time to put safety first rather than venture out to exposed viewpoints for photographs.
