Major Overnight Fire Causes Serious Damage at Playa Blanca’s Papagayo Shopping Centre
Emergency crews were called to a significant fire at the Papagayo Shopping Centre in Playa Blanca during the early hours of Tuesday morning after flames engulfed one of the commercial premises inside the complex. Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control, but the affected unit was badly affected and a neighbouring business also suffered extensive damage.
According to information released by Lanzarote emergency services, firefighters were alerted shortly before 5am and arrived to find the fire already fully developed inside the premises. Crews established an immediate attack on the blaze while electricity supplies to the affected area were disconnected to ensure the safety of emergency personnel.
Once the flames had been extinguished, firefighters carried out ventilation operations to remove smoke, heat and combustion gases from the building. Teams also conducted inspections for hidden hot spots to reduce the risk of the fire reigniting.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the incident, and investigations are expected to continue.
No Injuries Reported
Despite the severity of the blaze, there have been no reports of injuries. Emergency responders were able to contain the fire before it spread further through the shopping complex, preventing what could have been a much larger incident.
Impact on Visitors and Local Businesses
The Papagayo Shopping Centre is one of Playa Blanca’s best-known commercial areas, attracting both residents and tourists throughout the year. Visitors staying in nearby hotels and holiday accommodation may notice the aftermath of the incident, although the wider resort continues to operate normally.
Businesses within the complex are expected to assess damage and determine whether any temporary closures or operational changes are necessary in the coming days.
Previous Fire Incidents at the Centre
This is not the first fire-related emergency to affect the Papagayo Shopping Centre. In 2023, firefighters were called to deal with a fire originating in a basement storage area, although that incident was brought under control without major structural damage.
Ongoing Investigation
Officials have yet to release details regarding the origin of the fire. As investigators examine the scene, further updates are expected concerning the cause, insurance assessments and the timeline for recovery of the affected premises.
Our thoughts are with the businesses affected and we wish them all the very best as they recover.
