Man Airlifted to Hospital After Near-Drowning Incident on La Graciosa Beach
A 55-year-old man was airlifted to hospital after suffering a near-drowning incident at one of La Graciosa’s most popular beaches, prompting a major emergency response involving medical teams, firefighters and a rescue helicopter.
The incident happened on Tuesday afternoon (11 August) at Playa de La Francesa, a well-known beach on the small island of La Graciosa, just north of Lanzarote. Emergency services were alerted shortly before 3:00pm after reports that several beachgoers had pulled a man from the sea showing signs of drowning.
Swift Response by Emergency Services
Following the emergency call, personnel from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), local healthcare professionals and firefighters were dispatched to the beach.
After assessing the man, medics determined he was suffering from what emergency services described as a moderate incomplete drowning. Due to the island’s limited medical facilities, a medical helicopter was sent to evacuate him.
The helicopter flew the patient to César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport, where a waiting ambulance transferred him to Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital in Arrecife for further treatment.
Beachgoers Played a Vital Role
According to emergency reports, nearby bathers were the first to reach the man and pull him from the water before emergency crews arrived.
Emergency personnel then worked alongside local beach services to provide treatment and secure a safe landing area for the rescue helicopter, allowing the evacuation to take place quickly.
Water Safety Around La Graciosa
Although La Graciosa is famous for its crystal-clear waters and unspoilt beaches, sea conditions can change rapidly. Strong currents and unexpected waves can develop even on seemingly calm days.
Visitors are encouraged to:
- Swim only in safe, designated areas.
- Pay attention to sea conditions and warning flags.
- Avoid swimming alone.
- Enter the water cautiously if currents appear strong.
- Call 112 immediately if someone is in difficulty.
Quick action by fellow beachgoers and emergency services can make a crucial difference in incidents such as this.
