Man Airlifted to Hospital After Serious Beach Incident on La Graciosa

A man was airlifted to Lanzarote after suffering serious injuries following a powerful wave at one of La Graciosa’s most well-known beaches, prompting a large-scale emergency response involving medical teams, firefighters and a rescue helicopter.

The incident happened at Playa de Las Conchas on Monday, 17 August, at 1:06pm, when emergency services received reports that a man had been pulled from the sea after being struck by a wave.

According to information released by the Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES 112), the injured man, believed to be around 50 years old, was rescued from the water before emergency responders arrived. Medical personnel from the La Graciosa Health Centre and the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) assessed and stabilised him at the scene after he sustained serious traumatic injuries.

Rescue Helicopter Deployed

Due to the seriousness of his condition and the island’s limited medical facilities, the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) helicopter was dispatched to carry out an air evacuation.

The helicopter transported the casualty to the emergency helipad in Arrecife, where he was transferred into a medicalised ambulance before being taken to Hospital Doctor José Molina Orosa for further treatment. Firefighters from the Lanzarote and La Graciosa Emergency Consortium assisted emergency crews during both the evacuation and landing operation.

Las Conchas Beach: Beautiful but Powerful

Las Conchas Beach is widely regarded as one of the most spectacular beaches in the Canary Islands, attracting visitors with its golden sand and breathtaking views across to the islets of Montaña Clara and Alegranza.

However, despite its beauty, the beach is also known for its strong Atlantic swell, powerful waves and dangerous currents, making swimming hazardous when sea conditions deteriorate. There are periods throughout the year when authorities advise visitors to remain out of the water due to rough seas.

Anyone visiting La Graciosa is encouraged to:

  • Check local sea conditions before entering the water.
  • Respect warning flags and safety notices.
  • Avoid swimming during rough seas or strong Atlantic swell.
  • Take extra care at remote beaches where emergency assistance may take longer to arrive.

A Reminder to Stay Safe

This latest incident serves as another reminder that while La Graciosa offers some of the most unspoilt beaches in the Canary Islands, the Atlantic Ocean can change rapidly. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the island’s natural beauty while always following local safety advice and respecting the power of the sea.
