Man Rescued After Falling Among Coastal Defences on Lanzarote Promenade

A man was rescued by emergency services in Lanzarote during the early hours of Wednesday, 5 August, after falling into an area of rocks and large concrete coastal defence blocks, commonly known as tetrapods, near a promenade.

According to the information released by local emergency services, the incident happened shortly before dawn. The man became trapped after falling through the gap between the promenade and the coastal protection structures, leaving him unable to climb back to safety. Firefighters were called to locate and rescue him before he could receive further medical treatment.

Firefighters Carry Out Rescue

Emergency responders, including firefighters and medical personnel, worked together to reach the injured man in what was described as a difficult rescue due to the location among the rocks and concrete sea defences.

Once safely recovered, the man was assessed by paramedics at the scene before being transferred by ambulance for further medical treatment. While the extent of his injuries has not been officially confirmed, emergency services considered it necessary for him to be taken to hospital.

Coastal Defences Can Be Dangerous

Many of Lanzarote’s promenades run alongside the Atlantic Ocean and are protected by large concrete tetrapods designed to reduce the force of waves and help prevent coastal erosion. Although they are an essential part of the island’s sea defences, they can create hazardous gaps and uneven surfaces that are difficult to escape from if someone falls.

Visitors and residents are reminded to remain on designated walkways, particularly after dark or during rough sea conditions, and to avoid climbing over barriers or venturing onto the rocks.

Safety Advice for Visitors to Lanzarote

Whether you’re enjoying an evening stroll or taking photographs along the coast, it’s worth following a few simple precautions:

  • Stay on marked promenades and footpaths.
  • Avoid walking on rocks or concrete sea defences.
  • Take extra care at night when visibility is reduced.
  • Keep a safe distance from the edge, especially during strong winds or high waves.
  • If someone falls or is injured, call 112, the Canary Islands emergency number.

Lanzarote Emergency Services Respond Quickly

Incidents such as this highlight the rapid response provided by Lanzarote’s emergency services, with firefighters, ambulance crews and other responders working together to bring the casualty to safety.

While serious accidents of this type are uncommon, they serve as a reminder that the island’s beautiful coastline should always be enjoyed with care.
