Nearly Six in Ten Canary Islands Residents Facing Financial Pressure, New Figures Reveal

New figures from the latest Canary Islands Consumer Confidence Index paint a concerning picture for households across the archipelago, with almost 60% of residents reporting some level of difficulty making ends meet. The data highlights the ongoing impact of the cost of living in the Canary Islands, despite the region continuing to attract millions of tourists every year.

According to the survey, 58% of adults are experiencing financial pressure. Around 35.6% say they are managing “with some difficulty”, while 23.2% report that paying their monthly bills is difficult or very difficult. In comparison, fewer than one in ten people say they are able to cover their living costs easily.

Financial pressures vary across the Canary Islands

The figures also show that the economic situation differs depending on where people live.

Northern Tenerife recorded the highest proportion of residents experiencing financial hardship, with nearly two-thirds reporting at least some difficulty managing household finances.

There was more positive news for Lanzarote, where residents were among the most optimistic about the months ahead. Just over 21% of those surveyed believe their financial situation will improve over the next six months, making the island one of the most hopeful areas in the archipelago.

Consumer confidence falls to its lowest level in five years

The report also revealed that overall consumer confidence in the Canary Islands has dropped to its lowest point in five years.

The Consumer Confidence Index fell to 64.3 points during the second quarter of 2026, reflecting growing concern about both current household finances and expectations for the future. More than half of those surveyed expect their financial situation to remain largely unchanged over the next six months, while relatively few believe conditions will improve.

What does this mean for Lanzarote?

For residents, the figures underline the continuing challenge of balancing rising living costs with household income. Although Lanzarote remains heavily supported by tourism and continues to benefit from visitor spending, many local families are still feeling the squeeze from everyday expenses.

For visitors, the findings offer a reminder that while Lanzarote remains one of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations, many of the people working in hospitality, retail, transport and local services are facing the same financial pressures seen across much of Europe.

Supporting independent restaurants, cafés, shops and locally owned businesses can help ensure more tourism spending remains within the island’s economy and benefits local communities.

Looking ahead

While the Canary Islands economy is still expected to grow during 2026, economists have warned that slower tourism growth, housing shortages and ongoing cost pressures remain significant challenges. Whether consumer confidence improves will largely depend on inflation easing, wage growth and the overall economic outlook during the coming months.
